IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The given diagram illustrates the production of electricity by used of geothermal energy.

Overall, for production of electricity the cold water passes through the injection well and the production well which convert into hot water. The hot water is using to generate steam from condenser which finally produce electricity from generator.

Initially, the sea cold water is pumped down the earth around 4.5 kilometers. In the next phase, it moves through the injection well and passes water between the hot rock which is called geothermal zone.It converts into hot water that pumped upward the condenser through the production well.

In the condenser process, hot water converts into the steam. After that, turbine are getting power due to steam are going to pass from it. As a result of turbine move, it produces geothermal energy which passes through generator. The generator convert geothermal energy into electricity which through wire are supplied to the homes for uses.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You identify the main stages and provide an overview: water is pumped underground, heated by the hot rocks, brought back up, and used to generate electricity. The 4.5-kilometre depth is also reported accurately. This covers the process, but some details are unclear or inaccurate: the water is not described as “sea” water, and the diagram shows steam powering the turbine and the turbine driving the generator, rather than geothermal energy passing from the turbine to the generator. The final claim that electricity is supplied to homes is not shown; the diagram indicates transmission by power lines. To strengthen the response, describe each stage precisely and keep the overview focused on the complete sequence and the roles of the turbine and generator.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall arrangement, with an overview followed by stages in process order. Sequencing phrases such as “Initially,” “In the next phase,” and “After that” help the reader follow the diagram, and the paragraph breaks are appropriate. However, some links between stages are unclear: for example, “it moves through the injection well” does not clearly distinguish the water’s downward movement from its later passage through the geothermal zone. The final paragraph also shifts between the turbine, generator, and electricity without consistently showing which component drives the next. Use more precise references such as “the heated water” and “the resulting steam,” and connect each stage explicitly to the next.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant process vocabulary, including “injection well,” “production well,” “geothermal zone,” “condenser,” and “turbine,” which helps communicate the diagram’s subject. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, such as “by used of geothermal energy,” “sea cold water,” and “turbine are getting power.” There is also repetition of basic terms such as “converts” and “produces,” and some word forms are not suitable for the intended meaning. Aim for more precise process language and natural collocations, while retaining the technical labels. This would make the description clearer and more fluent without requiring unnecessarily complex vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including a relative clause in “hot rock which is called geothermal zone” and a result clause beginning “As a result.” However, control is limited, and errors occur across verb forms, agreement, articles, and sentence construction. For example, “The hot water is using to generate steam” needs a passive form, while “turbine are getting power” has a subject–verb agreement problem. In “it produces geothermal energy which passes through generator,” the clause structure also obscures the intended sequence. Practise accurate passive constructions for processes and check agreement and articles in each sentence. More reliable control of these patterns would make the stages easier to understand.
