IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

INTODUCTION:-

THE GIVEN DIAGRAM SHOWS HOW THE ELECTRICITY IS PRODUCED BY GEOTHERMAL ENERGY.IT ILLUSTRATES THE PLANT IN WHICH ELECTRICITY IS PRODUCED BY GEOTHERMAL ENERGY.

SUMMARY:-

FIRSTLY THE COLD WATER WATER ENTERS AND PUMPED 4.5 KM DOWN THE INJECTION WELL.AND THEN IN GEOTHERMAL ZONE IT IS CONVERTED INTO HOT WATER.HOT ROCKS ARE USED TO CONVERT COLD WATER INTO HOT WATER .AND THEN PASSING BY THE PRODUCTION WELL HOT WATER IS PUMED 4.5 KM UP INTO THE CONDENSER.IN THE CONDENSER IT IS CONVERTED INTO STEAM AND THEN THE STEAM ENTERS THE TURBINE WHICH GIVES POWER TO THE TURBINE .AND THEN IT IS TRANSFERED TO THE GENERATOR WHICH IS POWERED AND RUN BY TURBINE.THE GENERATOR PRODUCES THE ELECTRICITY WHICH IS PROVIDED TO THE WHOLE AREA BY POWER STATION .POLES ARE USED TO TRANSFER ELECTRICITY BY USING WIRES ALSO.THAT IS THE EXPANATION OF WHOLE DIAGRAM WHICH PROVIDES THE INFORMATION ABOUT THE ELECTRICITY PRODUCED BY GEOTHERMAL ENERGY.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You identify the main process and report its key stages in the correct order: cold water is sent down the injection well, heated by hot rocks, brought up through the production well, and used to generate electricity. The 4.5 km depth is also accurately included. However, the response does not provide a clear overview of the process as a whole, and some details are inaccurate or unsupported. For example, the diagram shows water becoming steam in the condenser, not simply being “converted” there without explaining the stage, and it does not say that electricity is supplied to the “whole area” or that a “power station” distributes it. Focus on the diagram’s stated components and summarise the overall transformation more clearly.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The stages are generally presented in a sensible sequence, and words such as “Firstly,” “and then,” and “then” help the reader follow the process. However, the response is written as one long block, with labels such as “INTRODUCTION” and “SUMMARY” rather than clear, useful paragraphing. Linking phrases are also repeated heavily, making the progression mechanical; several stages are joined into a single extended sentence. The final sentence, “That is the explanation of whole diagram,” adds little to the description and interrupts the ending. Use a short introduction and overview, followed by a paragraph describing the process in grouped stages, with varied links such as “after this” and “finally.”

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use relevant process vocabulary, including “injection well,” “production well,” “geothermal zone,” “condenser,” “turbine,” and “generator,” so the reader can recognise the main equipment. However, the range of verbs and expressions is limited, with repeated use of “converted,” “enters,” and “powered.” Several word choices or spellings reduce precision, including “gives power to the turbine” and “poles” for the transmission structure. There are also noticeable spelling errors such as “pumed,” “transfered,” and “expanation.” Aim for accurate process verbs and standard spelling, and avoid repeating the same general terms when more precise vocabulary is available.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response attempts to describe a sequence using longer sentences and some passive forms, such as “cold water ... is pumped” and “electricity ... is provided.” However, the sentence structures are often incomplete or joined incorrectly, and errors frequently make the relationships between stages harder to follow. For instance, “FIRSTLY THE COLD WATER WATER ENTERS AND PUMPED” lacks a clear grammatical construction, while “the steam enters the turbine which gives power to the turbine” has an unclear relative clause and repeats the subject incorrectly. Articles and verb forms are also inconsistent, as in “in geothermal zone” and “the generator produces the electricity.” Use complete sentences with one main process step per clause, and check subject–verb agreement, articles, and punctuation.
