IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
The diagram below illustrates how geothermal energy is used to make electricity.
Overall, the process complete in five steps.Cold water pumped down into geothermal rocks and again pumped up into condenser then steam hlep to rotate a turbine and make a electricity.
Initially, Cold water is pumped down about 4.5km in injection well after that geothemal rocks heat water upto 100 celsius after that the production well pumped up the water using motor and the all water is collected in condenser after that condenser convert hot water into stream.
Furthermore, huge pressure of steam is help to rotate a turbine. Turbine is dc motor when steam pressure help to rotate a tubine dc gernator help to produce a electricity after this electricity is in huge amout so initially huge amount of energy is managed

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You identify the main process and include the important 4.5 km depth, the underground heating stage, and the turbine-generator sequence. However, the account is only partial and contains unsupported details: the diagram does not state that the water reaches 100°C, that a motor pumps it up, or that the turbine is a DC motor. The final claim about a “huge amount of energy” being managed is unclear and not shown. The overview also says the process has five steps without clearly summarising the full sequence. The response is below the required 150 words, which limits how fully you can report the stages. To improve, describe only what the diagram shows and explain each stage accurately, from cold-water injection to electricity generation.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a basic overall structure: an introduction, an overview, and a paragraph describing the stages. The sequence is generally understandable, and words such as “Initially” and “after that” help show order. However, the overview and process description repeat information, while the long final paragraph strings several stages together with repeated “after that.” This makes progression mechanical and some relationships unclear, particularly in the final sentence about electricity and energy. There is also no clear separation between the water-heating stages and the electricity-generation stages. Use shorter, logically grouped sentences and paragraphs, and vary linking expressions so each stage connects clearly to the next.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use some relevant process vocabulary, including “injection well,” “production well,” “condenser,” “steam,” and “turbine,” which helps communicate the topic. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate, sometimes making the meaning difficult to follow. For example, “steam hlep to rotate” and “huge pressure of steam is help” do not express the process naturally, while “managed” is unclear in the final sentence. Spelling errors such as “geothemal,” “tubine,” and “gernator” also reduce precision. Build a more accurate set of process verbs and check spelling; for instance, explain that steam “drives” the turbine and the generator “produces” electricity.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt to describe a sequence using both simple clauses and longer sentences, but the range is limited and errors are frequent enough to make parts difficult to understand. Examples include “the process complete in five steps,” where the verb form is missing, and “the production well pumped up the water,” where the passive construction is needed. Agreement and article errors also appear in “steam hlep to rotate a turbine and make a electricity.” Several sentences run together without appropriate punctuation, especially the overview and the final paragraph. Practise accurate passive forms for process descriptions, such as “water is pumped down” and “steam is produced,” and use full stops to separate stages. Check verb forms, articles, and sentence boundaries.
