IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The diagram illustrate how to generate electricity from geotherma energy.

Overall, we can see that this processing diagram consists several stages, to begining with cold water and ending with produces electric power and transmission to load centre.

To starting with, cold water stored in an big container. They are then, it was pumped down to under the ground around 4.5 kilometers. In the second step, that water were made hot, and it was pumped up upto same distance in a big condenser. In condenser, were hot water made in steam form.

Following this step, the team was injected into turbine. they are then, it was start rotating clock wise. Due to this, generator start producing electricity because both turbine and generator connected to each other. After generating power, this power transmitted to load centre or consumre. That power is consumed by local peoples and big industries. This process was still countinue to producing power.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You identify the main process and give a broad overview, moving from cold water to electricity generation, and you correctly include the 4.5-kilometre depth. The sequence of pumping water down, heating it underground, bringing it back up, and using steam to drive a turbine is also recognisable. However, some stages are unclear or inaccurately described: the water is not pumped “up to same distance in a big condenser”; it rises through the production well to the surface, where it enters the condenser. The claims about a “load centre,” local people, industries, and continuous production are not shown in the diagram. To strengthen the response, report the depicted stages precisely and avoid adding unsupported details.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall shape: an introduction, an overview, and a description that follows the process from water storage to electricity generation. Sequencing phrases such as “In the second step” and “Following this step” help the reader follow the stages. However, some links are mechanical or confusing, particularly “To starting with” and “They are then, it was,” and the final sentences move beyond the diagram to consumers and industries. Pronoun references such as “they” and “that power” are not always clear. Use straightforward transitions such as “First,” “Next,” and “Finally,” and keep each stage in a logical paragraph or sequence, with references that clearly identify the water, steam, turbine, and generator.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant process vocabulary, including “cold water,” “condenser,” “turbine,” “generator,” and “electricity,” so the reader can identify the main components. There are also attempts at more specific language, such as “transmitted” and “rotating.” However, several word choices or forms are inaccurate or unnatural: “processing diagram,” “team” for steam, “load centre,” and “consumre” make parts of the account unclear or unsupported. Spelling errors such as “geotherma,” “begining,” and “continue” also reduce precision. Build a reliable set of process terms and check spelling and collocations; for example, describe steam as passing through a pipe to the turbine rather than saying it is “injected” into it.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more extended sentences, and the overall sequence can usually be understood. However, errors in sentence structure, verb forms, agreement, and articles occur across the response. For example, “The diagram illustrate” needs subject–verb agreement, while “this processing diagram consists several stages” is missing “of.” The sentence “In condenser, were hot water made in steam form” has an unclear word order and passive construction, and “generator start producing” needs a correctly formed verb. Some sentences also shift inconsistently between past and present forms. Practise accurate present-simple descriptions of processes and passive forms, such as “Cold water is pumped down” and “The water is heated,” while checking articles and agreement in each sentence.
