IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The given diagram illustrates how geo heat power is consumed for electricity production.
The overall process is completed in 5 steps. The production unit first step is cold water and that is processed to make steam. The turbines are powered and electricity is produced.
The process starts with cold water insertion through a 4.5 kilometers pipe. This is further pumped down into the injection well. The injection well takes this water to the hot rocks of geothermal zone. Temperature of cold water is raised through these hot rocks. In the third step, water goes to the production well. Here the hot water is pushed up to the condenser.
In the fourth step, water is condensed and steam is produced. The condensing unit is connected through a pipe to the turbines, where 5th and last stage of electricity production is performed. This section is based on turbine and generator. The turbines are powered by the steam produced. Generator is powered by the turbines and electricity is produced.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You cover the main sequence from cold-water input to electricity generation, and the 4.5 km depth and roles of the injection well, production well, condenser, turbine and generator are mostly reported accurately. The overview identifies the five stages and the broad transformation into steam and electricity. However, some details are unclear or imprecise: the water is not pumped down “through a 4.5 kilometers pipe” but down the injection well, which extends to that depth, and the condenser is described as condensing water rather than producing steam from the hot water. The overview also repeats the stages without clearly summarising the key overall mechanism. Make the overview more precise and distinguish the water-heating, steam-production and electricity-generation stages.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response is arranged in a clear sequence, moving from an overview to the underground stages and then to the equipment at the surface. Phrases such as “The process starts,” “In the third step,” and “In the fourth step” help the reader follow the diagram, and the paragraph break separates the overview from the detailed account. This already gives the report a coherent overall progression. To make the organisation more fluent, reduce the repeated step labels and connect related actions more naturally. For example, the final section repeats that turbines are powered by steam and that the generator is powered by the turbines; these could be combined into one concise explanation of how steam drives the turbine and generator.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use a relevant range of process vocabulary, including “injection well,” “geothermal zone,” “condenser,” “turbines” and “generator,” which allows you to describe the main components. Some less precise or unnatural choices limit the clarity and flexibility of the vocabulary, however. “Geo heat power” is not a natural term for this process, while “cold water insertion” and “production unit first step” are awkward formulations. “The water is condensed” also misrepresents the function of the condenser; the diagram shows steam being produced. Aim for standard technical collocations and precise verbs, such as “geothermal power,” “water is pumped down,” and “the heated water is converted into steam.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You use both simple sentences and some longer structures, including “The injection well takes this water to the hot rocks of geothermal zone” and “The condensing unit is connected through a pipe to the turbines, where … electricity production is performed.” The sequence remains understandable, but some grammatical errors and awkward constructions reduce accuracy. Articles are missing in phrases such as “to the hot rocks of geothermal zone” and “Generator is powered,” and “through a 4.5 kilometers pipe” has an incorrect plural form and structure. The sentence beginning “The overall process is completed in 5 steps” is also followed by fragments or unclear clauses. Practise accurate articles, singular/plural forms and complete sentence patterns, while retaining a mix of simple and complex sentences.
