IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The diagram illustrates the utilization of geothermal energy to produce electricity.
Production of electricity in a geothermal power plant is an industrial process which starts by pumping down the cold water through a injection well with a length of 4.5 km. There is a geothermal zone, containing hot rocks, which converts the cold water into the hot water as cold water absorbs heat from hot rocks then pumped up the hot water through production well. The condenser produces steam from hot water as water condenses here and evaporates the steam. Consequently, the steam provides power to the turbine by helping it rotate in a clockwise mode. Finally, the generator is powered by turbine and produced electricity which is then paased through lthe line connected to national grid and lastly electricity is distributed among the local grids.
This process a great alternative to use coal in power plant to produce electricy as burning coal leads to environmental pollution as well as carbon foor-print.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You identify the main stages, including water being pumped down a 4.5 km injection well, heated by hot rocks, raised through the production well, and used to generate electricity. However, some details are inaccurate or unsupported: the condenser is described as where water “condenses,” although the diagram shows it releasing steam, and the clockwise turbine rotation, national grid, and local distribution are not shown. The final paragraph about coal and pollution is outside the process description and takes space from a clear overview of the system’s main transformation and sequence. To strengthen the response, report only visible information and summarise the complete flow accurately, including steam driving the turbine and the turbine powering the generator.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The stages are generally presented in a sensible order, and linking expressions such as “Consequently” and “Finally” help the reader follow the process. This gives the response a coherent overall arrangement. However, the main process is compressed into one long paragraph, while the separate concluding paragraph introduces an unrelated comparison with coal rather than completing the summary. Some links also make the sequence less clear: “as water condenses here and evaporates the steam” is difficult to follow, and “which is then passed through the line” has an unclear reference. Use separate paragraphs for an overview and the process details, and connect each stage with precise references to the water, steam, turbine, and generator.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use a reasonable range of process vocabulary, including “geothermal zone,” “injection well,” “production well,” “condenser,” and “turbine.” These terms make the subject clear, and phrases such as “absorbs heat” are appropriate. However, some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward: “converts the cold water into the hot water” is less precise than describing it as heating the water, and “provides power … by helping it rotate in a clockwise mode” is unnecessarily elaborate. There are also spelling errors, including “paased,” “electricy,” and “foor-print,” which reduce accuracy. Aim for concise, natural process language and check spelling carefully; avoid adding technical-sounding details that the diagram does not provide.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response attempts both simple and complex sentences, for example, “There is a geothermal zone, containing hot rocks, which converts…” and the sentence beginning “as cold water absorbs heat…”. The sequence remains mostly understandable, but some grammatical errors and awkward constructions affect clarity. Examples include “a injection well” instead of “an injection well,” “then pumped up the hot water” without a clear subject, and “the generator is powered by turbine and produced electricity,” where the verb forms do not match the intended meaning. The long second sentence also joins several stages without clear control of clauses. Use complete clauses with consistent tense and articles, and divide the process into shorter sentences so each action has a clear subject and verb.
