IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The diagram display the information of Geothermal power plant is to produce the electricity.
Overall, electricity prroduce from the water, this method is contain in 5 steps. In addition, this process is depend on the cold water pumped down in 4.5 kilometer water are moving toward the thermal pipe or reached on production well.
To begin with, cold water is pumped down through the pipe which is downward 4.5 kilometers, reached on injection well and go towards the geothermal zone Although, geothermal zone are hot pipe and cold water is transfered into hot water and reached on production well.
Moreover, Hot water is reach on production well and pumped upward into the condensor, that are fullfilled by pressure of steam into condensor. In addition, the steam are moving towards the turbine then, turbine are moving faster and faster and powered by steam.Furthermore, turbine moving towards generator and powered by turbine and produces electricity So, generator trasfered power toward the tower.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You identify the process as electricity generation and give a broad sequence from cold water being pumped underground to electricity being produced. The overview also notes the five numbered stages and the 4.5-kilometre depth, which are relevant features. However, some stages are not fully or accurately explained: the geothermal zone heats the water as it passes through hot rocks, rather than being a “hot pipe,” and the condenser is described as being “fullfilled by pressure of steam,” which does not clearly report that it produces steam. The final connection to the transmission pylon is mentioned as a “tower,” but the turbine-generator relationship could be stated more precisely. A clearer overview and more accurate explanation of each transformation would make the account more complete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response follows the process in a generally logical order, moving from the injection well through the geothermal zone and production well to the turbine and generator. The opening overview and the use of “To begin with” and “Moreover” help signal progression. However, several transitions are mechanical or do not show the relationship between stages clearly: “In addition” is repeated, and “Although” introduces a clause that does not express a contrast. Some sentences also combine several steps without clear boundaries, particularly the final sentence, where the turbine, generator and electricity transmission are run together. Organising the stages into clearer sentences and using connectors that express sequence or cause would improve the flow and make references between components easier to follow.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant process vocabulary, including “injection well,” “production well,” “geothermal zone,” “turbine” and “generator,” so the reader can recognise the main components. There are also attempts at more specific language, such as “pumped upward” and “powered by steam.” However, inaccurate word choice and spelling sometimes make the description unclear: “thermal pipe” does not accurately name the geothermal zone, “condensor” is misspelled, and “transfered” and “prroduce” contain spelling errors. Phrases such as “turbine are moving faster and faster” are imprecise for describing the diagram. Aim for accurate process collocations and consistent spelling, for example, “water is heated by hot rocks” and “steam drives the turbine.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and more extended sentence forms, including a sequence joined with “then” and an overview beginning “Overall.” The stages are usually recognisable despite grammatical problems. However, errors in verb forms and agreement occur in several sentences: “The diagram display,” “electricity prroduce,” and “the steam are moving” should use correctly inflected verbs and matching subjects. Articles and sentence boundaries are also inconsistent, as in “reached on injection well” and the long final sentence beginning “Furthermore,” which needs clearer punctuation. Some complex constructions, such as “Although, geothermal zone are hot pipe,” are faulty and obscure the intended relationship. Practise accurate present-simple passive forms for processes, and separate each stage into a complete, correctly punctuated sentence.
