IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The figure presents the steps involved to produce electricity by using geothermal energy.
Overall, process includes five steps from pumping down the cold water till generator producing electricity powered by turbines.
Cold water is pumped about four and half kilometer down from where it is injected into the geothermal zone through the injection well.Geothermal zone consists of hot rocks which turn up the temperature of the water, then it passes through the production well and hot water water is pumped up into the condenser.
Condenser turns the hot water into steam. This steam will rotate the turbine in one direction. The rotation of the turbine will produce the electricity through generator. Generator produces the electricity with the help of turbine and than this electricity is passed over the electric wires to the grid.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You identify the process as geothermal electricity production and describe its main sequence: cold water is sent underground, heated by hot rocks, brought back up, converted to steam, and used to drive a turbine and generator. The stated depth of about 4.5 kilometres is also accurate. However, the overview is imprecise: there are five numbered stages, but the process includes several linked actions, and the generator—not the turbine—produces electricity. Some details are underdeveloped, including the role of the condenser and the final connection to the transmission system. The response also falls 18 words short of the required minimum, limiting the opportunity to report the stages fully. A clearer overview and a little more precise explanation would strengthen coverage.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response follows the diagram’s sequence from water injection to electricity generation, and the paragraph breaks broadly separate the introduction, overview, and process details. This gives the account a coherent overall arrangement. However, progression is sometimes weakened by unclear links between stages. For example, “from where it is injected” has an unclear reference, and the transition from the condenser to the turbine could be expressed more directly. The overview also repeats information that is explained later rather than summarising the process as a whole. Use clearer sequencing expressions such as “after passing through the hot rocks” and “the resulting steam then drives the turbine,” and ensure each paragraph has a distinct purpose.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant process vocabulary, including “injection well,” “production well,” “geothermal zone,” “condenser,” and “turbine,” which makes the subject clear. There are also some suitable paraphrases, such as “pumped down” and “pumped up.” However, several choices are imprecise or repetitive: “turn up the temperature” is not a natural way to describe heating, and “produce the electricity” is repeated. “Electric wires” is less precise than “power lines,” while “rotate the turbine in one direction” adds an unnecessary detail not shown in the diagram. Aim for accurate process collocations and vary repeated wording; this would make the description more precise and natural.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mixture of simple and complex sentences, including the relative clause “which turn up the temperature of the water” and the sequence joined by “then.” The main stages remain understandable, but some grammatical errors and punctuation problems reduce accuracy. For example, “process includes five steps” needs an article (“the process”), and “hot water water” contains an accidental repetition. The sentence beginning “Cold water is pumped…” runs into the next sentence without a space after the full stop, and “than this electricity” should be “then this electricity.” There is also a subject–verb issue in “Geothermal zone consists,” which needs “The geothermal zone consists.” Check articles, sentence boundaries, and verb forms when proofreading.
