IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
The process diagram illustrates how electricity is generated from geothermal energy.
Overall, the process consists of five mai stages, beginning with the injection of cold water underground of electricity at the power station.
Go into more deth, this process stars from injection of cold water into the underground well where geothermal zone in present the zone converted cold water into hot water and hot water pumped up with production well into the condenser. then in condenser hot water converted into steam .This steam use to start the turbine and this trubine used to produce electricity

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You identify the diagram’s subject and give a basic account of the main sequence: cold water enters underground, is heated in the geothermal zone, rises through the production well, and becomes steam that powers a turbine. However, the overview is unclear and inaccurate: “beginning with the injection of cold water underground of electricity at the power station” does not describe the process coherently. The account also omits the generator, which is the component that produces electricity, and gives little detail about the 4.5 km depth or the full sequence. The response is substantially below the required 150 words, so several important features remain undeveloped. To improve, provide a clear overview and describe each stage, including the turbine driving the generator.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
There is a recognisable attempt to organise the response with an opening, an overview, and a further description. The sequence from water injection to steam and turbine is broadly understandable, and “then” helps signal the next stage. However, the overview sentence is difficult to follow, and the main description is compressed into one long, loosely connected sentence. The transition “Go into more deth” does not function naturally as a report section, while the repeated use of “and” makes the relationships between stages unclear. Use separate sentences or paragraphs for the overview and process details, and connect stages with precise sequencing language such as “after passing through the hot rocks” and “the resulting steam then drives the turbine.”
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The response uses some relevant process vocabulary, including “injection,” “geothermal zone,” “production well,” “condenser,” “steam,” and “turbine.” These terms show awareness of the diagram’s subject and allow the reader to follow much of the process. However, the range is limited, and several spelling and word-choice errors reduce clarity, including “mai,” “deth,” “stars,” and “trubine.” Phrases such as “zone in present” and “converted cold water into hot water” are also not expressed naturally. Aim to use accurate process verbs and collocations, for example, “water is heated as it passes through hot rocks” and “steam drives the turbine.” Proofreading technical terms carefully would make the description more precise.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
You attempt to describe a sequence using both a simple opening sentence and a longer sentence with linked stages. However, grammatical control is weak, and errors frequently make the relationships between ideas difficult to understand. For example, “the process consists of five mai stages, beginning with the injection of cold water underground of electricity” has an incomplete or confused construction. In “where geothermal zone in present,” the article and verb are missing, while “This steam use to start the turbine” lacks the required auxiliary verb. The final sentence also incorrectly says the turbine is used to produce electricity, rather than clearly stating that it drives the generator. Practise complete passive forms such as “water is pumped” and “steam is produced,” and use full stops to separate stages.
