IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
Geo means earth and thermal means heat.Geothermal energy is used for the production of electricity.Electricity is the basic need of humans. Moreover, factories, industries and machinery depend on electric current.
Overall, the map shows the process of geothermal power plant.Cold water passes through a process then generate in electricity.Furthermore, electricity is the essential part of our life.
As shown in figure, cold water pushed 4.5 km down in the injection well.Afterwards, it goes out and hit with hot rocks. Then it move in upward direction.Aftr hitting the geothermal zone it become hot. Moreover,it passes through the condenser after the process of condensation it become steam. Then, it moves towards turbine which is known as powered of steam. Finally it generate the electricity by using turbine.
Geothermal power plant provide a renewable energy and it is uses in our daily life.It reduces the rate of load shedding and makes our life easy.We complete our daily tasks in few hours instead of days or weeks. The cold water push down in earth suface and pass through whole process.Afterwards, it direct convert into steam and produce electrici

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You identify the main process and include several accurate stages: cold water is sent down the injection well, heated by hot rocks, brought back up, and used to produce steam that powers a turbine. The 4.5 km depth is also correctly reported. However, the overview is vague (“passes through a process”) and does not clearly summarise the complete sequence or explain that the generator, driven by the turbine, produces electricity. Some details are inaccurate or unclear: the water does not “goes out” after being pumped down, and the condenser is described as carrying out condensation rather than releasing steam. The comments about daily life and load shedding are not features of the diagram. Focus on a precise overview and the diagram’s stages.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
The response has paragraph breaks and uses sequencing expressions such as “Afterwards,” “Moreover,” and “Finally,” so the reader can recognise an intended order. However, progression is weakened by repeated information and by material that does not belong in a process description, particularly the opening comments about electricity’s importance and the final claims about daily life and load shedding. Some links are also unclear: “Afterwards, it goes out” does not specify what happens to the water, while “After hitting the geothermal zone” repeats the preceding point. Organise the response into a brief overview followed by a step-by-step account, and use references such as “the heated water” to make connections precise.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use some relevant process vocabulary, including “injection well,” “geothermal zone,” “condenser,” “steam,” and “turbine,” which helps identify the equipment. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate, making parts of the process difficult to picture. For example, “hit with hot rocks” is not a natural way to describe water being heated, and “powered of steam” should express that the turbine is powered by steam. “Generate in electricity” and “direct convert into steam” are also unclear. There are spelling and word-form slips, including “Aftr” and “electrici.” Use precise process verbs and check spelling and collocations when revising.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response attempts both simple and linked sentences, and the sequence is generally understandable. However, grammatical errors occur frequently and sometimes make relationships between stages unclear. Examples include “cold water pushed 4.5 km down,” which needs a passive verb form, “Then it move,” where subject–verb agreement is missing, and “it become hot,” which has the same verb-form problem. The sentence beginning “Moreover,it passes through the condenser” also joins ideas without clear punctuation, and “it is uses” contains an incorrect verb construction. Practise accurate present-simple and passive forms for describing processes, and check agreement, articles, and sentence boundaries. Shorter, complete sentences would improve control.
