IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
The illustration gives information about the production of electricity from geothermal energy. Overall, electricity produced from water in different steps.Meanwhile, water is use in the process of making electricity. First they cool the water then cold water pumped out higher level to lower level in the distance of 4.5 kilometres and this water produce too much speed and then cold water collect in the injection well and then transfer to geothermal zone where this water heated and then they pumped up this hot water to condenser with help of injection well and when it's enter in condenser it's hot again and it's evaporate and get the shape of steam then this steam transfer to turbine where it's circulate around the turbine and after circulating this steam come in the form of powered and it's has more tendency and it's transfer to last process in generator where this steam powered get the actual shape known as electricity and then electricity produced and then it's transfer to tower's and throw tower's it's supplied for house uses and many other purpose.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You identify the topic and describe the main sequence from water being pumped underground to electricity generation, including the 4.5-kilometre depth and the roles of the turbine and generator. However, the overview is unclear: “electricity produced from water in different steps” does not clearly summarise how geothermal heat drives the process. Some details are inaccurate or unsupported. The water is heated by hot rocks, not made fast, and it is pumped up through the production well, not the injection well. The condenser is also described as making the water “hot again,” whereas the diagram shows steam being released there. To strengthen the response, give a concise overview of the complete process and report each stage accurately, without adding claims such as electricity being supplied to houses.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response follows the general order of the process, beginning with cold water and ending with electricity, so the reader can recognise an intended sequence. However, nearly all the information is packed into one long passage, with repeated “and then” links rather than clear stages or paragraphing. This makes the progression difficult to follow, especially where the account moves from the wells to the condenser and then to the turbine. Some references are also unclear, such as “this water” and “it's” appearing repeatedly. Organise the description into an introduction and overview, followed by logically grouped stages, and use precise links such as “next,” “as it rises,” and “finally” selectively.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use some relevant process vocabulary, including “geothermal zone,” “injection well,” “condenser,” “turbine,” and “generator,” which helps identify the equipment. However, the range is limited and several word choices or combinations are inaccurate, making parts of the process hard to understand. For example, “produce too much speed,” “get the shape of steam,” and “powered get the actual shape” do not express the intended changes clearly. Repetition of “water,” “steam,” and “transfer” also reduces precision. Build a more accurate set of process verbs and collocations, such as “heat,” “rise,” “convert into steam,” and “drive the turbine,” and use them consistently.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The response attempts to connect several stages using longer sentences, but these structures are often difficult to control, and many clauses run together without clear punctuation. There are frequent errors in verb forms and sentence construction, as in “water is use,” “then cold water pumped,” and “this water heated.” Agreement and pronoun forms are also inconsistent, including “it's circulate” and “it's has.” These errors sometimes make the sequence or meaning unclear. Practise writing one complete sentence for each stage, using passive forms where appropriate—for example, “Cold water is pumped down the injection well”—and check subject–verb agreement, articles, and punctuation before combining ideas.
