IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The diagram illustrates how the Geothermal power plant works and produce electricity and steps that are involved to produce the electricty.
overall, To produce electricity in geothermal power plant invloves five stages those are coldwater,The injection,The production well, Condenser and Turbine and produce electricity.
The cold water pumped down into the earth around 4.5 km then enter into the injection well and water flows through hot rocks which is called as Geothermal zone and reache to production well. In production well the hot water pumped up into the condenser here water converts into steam.
next, hot water converting into steam enters into turbine which is connected with generator where the power is genreated then the power is introduced to power plant. Thus the geothermal plays the key role in the process.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You identify the main process and include several accurate stages: cold water is sent underground, passes through hot rocks, returns through the production well, and becomes steam before driving the turbine. The 4.5 km depth is also correctly reported. However, the overview is unclear about the sequence and incorrectly presents the five stages as ending with the turbine, rather than explaining that the generator produces electricity. The final reference to power being introduced to the “power plant” is not supported by the diagram, which shows transmission lines. The response also falls 19 words short of the 150-word minimum. Add a fuller overview and describe the generator and electricity transmission to cover the process more completely.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a basic paragraph structure, with an introduction, an overview, and descriptions of the underground and surface stages. The sequence is generally understandable, and “then” and “next” help signal progression. However, the overview’s list of stages is difficult to follow, and the final paragraph repeats the conversion-to-steam information rather than moving cleanly to the turbine and generator. Some links between ideas are also unclear, particularly “where the power is generated then the power is introduced.” Use one clear chronological sequence and connect each stage explicitly to the next. More precise referencing and paragraph development would make the progression easier to follow.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant process vocabulary, including “injection well,” “production well,” “Geothermal zone,” “condenser,” and “turbine,” which helps communicate the diagram’s subject. However, the range is limited and some word choices or combinations are inaccurate or repetitive. For example, “produce electricity” is repeated, “water converts into steam” is less natural than a process description such as “is converted into steam,” and “power is introduced to power plant” does not clearly describe transmission. Spelling errors such as “electricty,” “invloves,” and “genreated” also reduce precision. Aim for accurate process verbs and collocations, such as “flows through,” “is heated,” and “drives the generator.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and longer sentences, including a sequence linked with “which” and “then,” but control is inconsistent. The opening has a subject–verb problem in “how the Geothermal power plant works and produce electricity,” and the overview contains incomplete or poorly joined phrasing: “those are coldwater,The injection…” In “The cold water pumped down,” a passive verb form is needed, while “water converts into steam” also needs a more accurate grammatical construction. Capitalisation and punctuation are inconsistent, especially after “overall” and around the stage list. These errors sometimes make relationships between stages difficult to interpret. Practise forming clear passive sentences and separating stages with accurate punctuation.
