IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The given diagram illustrates that how geothermal energy is put in practice in order to produce electricity from it. This ia a linear and man made process but geothermal energy in itsself is a natural process.
Overall, there are five main parts of a geothermal power plant that are the cold water vat,the injection well, the production well, condenser and the turbines interlinked with generator .
Firstly, cold water is pumped down to about 4.5km through a passway to the injection well. Followed by this pathway there is a geothermal zone(hot rocks) which change the temprature of cold water. Then, there is a production well that pumps water into condensor chamber which is 4.5 km above from it's location.
Condensor condenses the hot water coming from the production well into steam and further channalized it into turbines. These turbines are powered by steams's power and in turn they power generator. The generator operates and produce electricity. Finally, this electricity is transferred to power lines.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response covers the main stages in the diagram and gives a clear overall summary by identifying the key components of the plant. It correctly describes cold water being pumped down, heated in the geothermal zone, brought back up, and used to generate electricity. However, some details are unclear or inaccurate: the condenser is not “4.5 km above” the geothermal zone; 4.5 km indicates the depth of the injection well. The account also says the condenser turns hot water into steam, whereas it is more accurate to explain that the heated water is converted to steam there. The overview lists the parts but could better summarise the process’s central transformation from cold water to steam and then electricity. These unevenly developed details fit the response’s current level.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The information follows the process in a generally logical order, from the cold-water supply through the underground wells to the generator and power lines. Sequencing expressions such as “Firstly,” “Then,” and “Finally” help the reader follow the stages, and the response is arranged into an introduction, overview, and process description. However, some linking is mechanical or awkward: “Followed by this pathway” does not clearly connect the stages, and “Then, there is” is repeated as a basic transition. The overview’s list of components is also not fully integrated with the later explanation. Use clearer links that show cause and movement—for example, “As it passes through the hot rocks…”—and make references between stages more precise.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The response uses relevant process vocabulary, including “injection well,” “production well,” “geothermal zone,” “condenser,” and “generator,” which helps communicate the diagram’s subject. It also attempts more specific wording such as “pumped down” and “transferred.” However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural: “cold water vat,” “passway,” “condensor chamber,” and “channelized it into turbines” do not describe the equipment or movement naturally. Spelling errors such as “temprature,” “channalized,” and “itsself” also reduce control. Aim for standard technical terms and precise process verbs, such as “reservoir,” “pipe,” “heated,” and “flows,” while checking spelling carefully.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
There is a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, and the sequence is usually understandable. For example, “These turbines are powered by steam’s power and in turn they power generator” attempts to describe linked actions, while the final sentence clearly reports the outcome. Some grammatical errors remain, however. The opening phrase “illustrates that how” uses an incorrect clause pattern; write “illustrates how.” There are also article and agreement problems in “power generator” and “The generator operates and produce electricity,” where the noun needs an article and the verb should agree with its subject. The sentence about the condenser being “4.5 km above from it’s location” has an unclear grammatical relationship. Review articles, subject–verb agreement, and sentence construction to make these descriptions more accurate.
