IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 4.5)
there is currently a contenious arguments over wheather, Geothermal Energy is used to produce electricity. I totally agree with this statement that cold water pumped down the injection well and goethermal zone and hot rocks pumped up hot water in the production well.
The main reason is to beliving that gor thermal energy is used to produce electricity because the production well go through the condenser steam powered by steam. To illustrate the powered by the steam going in the turbine and then connect with the generator powered by turbine and produces electricity.
Another reasons why i agree and support the the geo thermal energy produced electricity. The notion that geothermal is due to the fact that producing electricity. For instance, The cold water converted into hot water pumped up the production well and steamed by condensor turbine produces electricity.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0
The response identifies several relevant elements, including cold water entering the injection well, hot water rising through the production well, and steam driving a turbine connected to a generator. However, it does not provide a clear overview of the complete process, and the description is repeatedly framed as an argument about whether geothermal energy produces electricity rather than as a factual summary of the diagram. Some stages are also confused: the condenser is described as being “powered by steam,” whereas it releases steam, and the heating of water in the geothermal zone is not clearly explained. The response is 10 words below the required minimum. To improve, summarise the process from underground water heating through electricity generation, accurately and in sequence.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0
There is a basic attempt to organise the response into three paragraphs, and phrases such as “The main reason” and “To illustrate” signal relationships between ideas. However, the paragraphs do not create a clear progression through the stages of the diagram. The opening introduces an irrelevant debate, while the final paragraph repeats the claim that geothermal energy produces electricity instead of adding a distinct process stage. Connections between steps are sometimes difficult to follow, particularly in the sentence beginning “The main reason is to beliving…”. Organise the response chronologically—water is pumped down, heated underground, brought up, converted to steam, and used to drive the turbine and generator—and use linking words only where they clarify that sequence.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The response uses some task-related vocabulary, including “injection well,” “production well,” “condenser,” “turbine,” and “generator,” so the reader can recognise the general subject. However, the range is limited and several word choices or spellings make the description unclear, such as “contenious arguments,” “goethermal,” and “steamed by condensor.” Repeated use of “powered by” also does not accurately distinguish the roles of the condenser, steam, turbine, and generator. Aim for precise process vocabulary and check spelling carefully. For example, describe water as being heated by hot rocks, steam as driving the turbine, and the generator as producing electricity.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The response attempts to combine ideas using clauses and infinitive forms, but sentence structures are often incomplete or faulty, and errors can obscure the process. For example, “cold water pumped down the injection well and goethermal zone and hot rocks pumped up hot water” lacks clear subjects and correctly formed verbs. The sentence beginning “The main reason is to beliving” also has an incorrect verb pattern, while “Another reasons why i agree and support the the…” shows problems with number, articles, and sentence construction. Punctuation and capitalisation are inconsistent as well. Practise writing complete sentences with a clear subject and verb, such as “Cold water is pumped down the injection well and heated by the hot rocks.”
