IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The diagram illustrates how a Geothermal power plant is used to produce electricity using several steps.

Overall, the process consists of five stages, beginning with Cold water pumping and ends with Generator where electricitty is produced.

The process begins with Cold water tank where water is pumped down through a 4.5 km deep injection well.Once the water reaches at the bottom of the well, the water is passed through a Geothermal zone which consists of hot rocks where the cold water becomes hot. This hot water is stored in production well, then it is pumped up to the condenser. Moving on to the consender, it converts the hot water into steam. This Steam is used to power turbine which helps to create a rotation effect. These rotations give power to the generator which helps to generate electricity.

As a result, Electricity is generated. This simple mechanism is used at the Geothermal power plants to generate electricity.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You cover the main sequence from pumping cold water underground to generating electricity, and you correctly include the 4.5 km depth, the hot-rock zone, both wells, the condenser, steam, turbine and generator. The overview identifies the process as a series of stages, although it would be clearer to describe the overall transformation from cold water to electricity rather than focus on the endpoint alone. Some details are less fully or precisely reported: the water is not described as being stored in the production well, and the turbine’s role is better stated as driving the generator than creating a “rotation effect.” The final sentence repeats the purpose without adding a feature. A more precise overview and closer description of the connections between stages would strengthen the report.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response follows the diagram’s sequence, and the paragraphing separates the overview from the detailed account. Linking expressions such as “Overall,” “The process begins,” and “Moving on” help the reader follow the stages. However, the progression becomes somewhat mechanical, and the final “As a result” sentence repeats the point that electricity is generated rather than advancing the description. Some references could also be clearer: “These rotations” refers to an effect that has not been clearly established, while “it” in the condenser sentence requires the reader to infer the subject. Grouping the underground stages and the surface machinery more deliberately, and using precise references between them, would make the cohesion smoother.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant process vocabulary, including “injection well,” “production well,” “Geothermal zone,” “condenser,” “steam,” and “turbine,” which allows you to describe the main components. There is some useful variation in expressions such as “pumped down,” “pumped up,” and “converts.” However, several choices are imprecise or repetitive: “rotation effect” is not a natural description of the turbine’s function, and “helps to create” and “helps to generate” recur. There are also spelling and capitalisation slips, including “electricitty” and “consender,” as well as inconsistent capitalisation of common nouns such as “Cold water” and “Steam.” More accurate collocations and careful proofreading would improve control.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including a relative clause in “a Geothermal zone which consists of hot rocks” and a time clause beginning “Once the water reaches…”. The sequence is generally understandable, but some grammatical errors remain. In the overview, “beginning with Cold water pumping and ends with Generator” mixes verb forms; use parallel forms, such as “beginning with cold water being pumped and ending with electricity generation.” In “where water is pumped down through a 4.5 km deep injection well.Once,” a space is missing after the full stop. “The water is passed through a Geothermal zone” would be more naturally formed as “passes through,” and “power turbine” needs an article (“power a turbine”). More consistent sentence control and punctuation would improve accuracy.
