IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 4.5)
The diagram illustrate that how to used geothermal power plant to produce electricity and explain the main features, and make comparison.
Overall, this picture demonstrates five stages in this plant. So, geothermal enery can provided several things in this diagram, such as cold water and lasted stage generated turbines.
Firstly, the cold water highest point like as 4.5 km and followed by the injection well than cold water pumped down. In addition, respectively geothermal zone (hot rocks) and they have production well because continuously the hot water pumped up and they have condenser made powered by steam. However, generator turbine such as, powered by turbine and produce electricity.
At the end, the figure this diagram shows that how to produce geothermal power in this things. Although, they have been showered up the power and I have to explain this topic. Generally, this picture gave many concepts that how to write this things and completely understand this task.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
You identify the subject as geothermal electricity production and mention several relevant labels, including cold water, the injection well, hot rocks, the production well, steam and the generator. However, the account only minimally describes how these parts work together. The overview that there are “five stages” is useful, but the stages are not clearly or accurately summarised: for example, the 4.5 km figure is described as the cold water’s “highest point,” rather than the depth of the injection well, and the condenser’s role is unclear. The final paragraph adds no process information. To improve, give a concise overview of the water-to-electricity sequence, then report each stage in order and explain that steam drives the turbine and generator produces electricity.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
There is an attempt to organise the response into an introduction, an overview and a body paragraph, and “Firstly” signals the start of the sequence. These features provide some basic structure. However, progression is difficult to follow because the stages are not consistently linked, and several sentences combine unrelated details. For instance, “respectively geothermal zone … and they have production well” does not make the relationship between the underground heating and the upward movement of hot water clear. The closing paragraph repeats that the diagram shows how electricity is produced but does not advance the description. Use one paragraph for the overview and another for the ordered process, with clear links such as “Next,” “Once heated,” and “Finally.”
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The response uses some task-related vocabulary, including “injection well,” “geothermal zone,” “hot rocks,” “condenser” and “turbine,” so the reader can recognise the general topic. However, the range is basic and several word choices or combinations are inaccurate enough to strain understanding. “Cold water highest point” does not express the well’s depth, while “lasted stage generated turbines” and “showered up the power” do not convey clear process meanings. There are also spelling errors such as “enery.” Aim for precise process vocabulary and natural collocations, for example, “water is pumped down,” “is heated by hot rocks,” and “steam drives the turbine.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
You attempt both simple statements and longer sentences, but grammatical control is very limited, and errors frequently make the process hard to understand. The opening, “The diagram illustrate that how to used,” has problems with subject–verb agreement, clause structure and verb form. Similar issues appear in “geothermal enery can provided” and “the hot water pumped up,” where the verb forms are incomplete or incorrectly formed. Sentence boundaries and punctuation also make some ideas run together, as in the long sentence beginning “In addition, respectively…”. Practise accurate present-simple passive forms for processes, such as “Cold water is pumped down” and “The water is heated,” and build each stage in a complete, clearly punctuated sentence.
