IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The linear diagram illustrate that how geothermal energy is used to manufacture electricity .

In an overview , there are total five step in this geothermal power plant , and how cold water convert into the electricity , and how prepare electricity.

First and foremost , in the linear diagram when delivered the cold water pumped down 4.5km into the injection well , and the injection well delivered into the geothermal zone ( hot rocks ) . However geothermal zone delivered into the production well , and prepared hot water pumped up , as well as hot water delivered into the uper level of condenser point.

At least but not last condenser water delivered into the steam . Furthermore steam delivered into the turbine by powered steam , and powered steam converted the into the generator of powered by turbine and produce electricity , AT the end of this electricity this prepare electricity used into the diffrent types of all world and human used all kind of activities this elctricity .

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You identify the process as geothermal electricity production and report its main sequence: cold water goes down the injection well, passes through hot rocks, rises through the production well, and is then used to generate electricity. The 4.5 km depth is also accurately included. This gives the reader a relevant account of the stages. However, the overview is unclear and does not clearly summarise the key transformation from underground heating to steam-driven generation. Some details are also inaccurate or unsupported: the condenser is described as delivering water into steam, rather than converting the hot water into steam, and the final claim about electricity being used for “all kind of activities” is not shown in the diagram. Clarifying these points and describing the turbine-generator relationship more precisely would strengthen the response.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable overall structure, with an introduction, an overview, and a description of the process in sequence. The stages are generally presented in the correct order, and connectors such as “First and foremost” and “Furthermore” help signal progression. However, some linking phrases are mechanical or unsuitable, particularly “At least but not last,” and repeated use of “delivered” makes the relationships between stages harder to follow. The overview also repeats the idea of electricity production without clearly stating the process’s main features. Use simpler, more precise transitions such as “Next” and “Finally,” and organise the stages into clear paragraphs so each part of the process is easy to track.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use several relevant terms from the diagram, including “injection well,” “geothermal zone,” “hot rocks,” “condenser,” “steam,” and “turbine.” This shows an adequate topic-related vocabulary, but the range is limited and some word choices or collocations are noticeably inaccurate. “Delivered” is repeated where “pumped,” “flows,” or “passes” would be more precise; “manufacture electricity” is less natural than “generate electricity”; and “upper level” is unclear in this context. There are also spelling errors such as “uper,” “diffrent,” and “elctricity.” Aim to use a small set of accurate process verbs and check spelling, rather than repeating one general verb throughout.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including clauses joined with “when,” “and,” and “as well as.” However, grammatical control is uneven, and errors sometimes make the intended relationships difficult to understand. For example, “The linear diagram illustrate that how” has subject–verb agreement and clause-structure problems, while “there are total five step” has errors in the article and plural form. In “the injection well delivered into the geothermal zone,” the sentence pattern does not clearly express what happens to the water. Work on accurate subject–verb agreement, articles and plurals, and use direct sentence patterns such as “Cold water is pumped down the injection well.” Check punctuation and spacing around sentence boundaries as well.
