IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
Nowadays produce electricity is a big concern. Geothermal energy is also use to product electricity by geothermal power plant.
Geothermal power plant is one of the best media to produce electricity easily. Firstly cold water pumped down through the injection well which is 4.5 kilometer down from the earth surface. Then the water went to the production well via geothermal zone which is made by hot rocks. Through this process water become hot and the hot water pumped up toward the earth surface.
Condeser is fitted with earth surface which convert hot water into steam.
Now the main portion will come to senario which convert steam into electricity. In this part generator and turbine are combine to produce electricity.
In first portion steam is useful to start the turbine, then it goes to the generator which is powered by turbine itself and at last produce the electricity.
This is the basic thought process to produce electricity by geothermal plant , which is much more reliable & easy process to generate electricity than other system. Also very less amount of money needed for this project and the result is on higher side as compared to others.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You identify the main sequence: cold water is pumped down the injection well, heated in the geothermal zone, brought up through the production well, and converted to steam before driving the turbine and generator. Including the well depth of 4.5 km is also a relevant detail. However, the response does not give a clear, accurate overview of the complete process, and some stages are unclear: the condenser releases steam, but the account says it converts hot water into steam without explaining the turbine’s role in driving the generator. The final claims that the system is cheaper, easier and more reliable than alternatives are not shown in the diagram. Focus on the illustrated stages and summarise the overall transformation from underground water to electricity without unsupported comparisons.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response is divided into paragraphs and generally follows the process from water entering the well to electricity generation, so the reader can follow its broad direction. Sequencing words such as “Firstly,” “Then,” and “at last” help signal order. However, progression becomes less clear in “the main portion will come to senario,” and the repeated references to “first portion” and “this part” do not identify the equipment precisely. The final paragraph shifts from describing the diagram to general claims about cost and reliability, weakening the focus. Use one paragraph for the overview and clearly ordered paragraphs for the stages, with specific references such as “the condenser” and “the turbine” rather than vague labels.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use several relevant process terms, including “injection well,” “production well,” “geothermal zone,” “steam,” “turbine,” and “generator,” which make the subject recognisable. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate or informal, such as “best media,” “main portion,” “basic thought process,” and “result is on higher side.” There are also spelling and word-form problems, including “Condeser” and “senario,” which reduce precision. Aim for neutral, technical language suited to describing a diagram, and use verbs that accurately express each stage, such as “flows,” “is heated,” “rises,” and “drives.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response attempts both simple and linked sentences, and the sequence is usually understandable. However, errors occur frequently in verb forms, agreement, articles and sentence construction. For example, “Geothermal energy is also use” needs a past participle, while “water become hot” needs subject–verb agreement. The sentence “Firstly cold water pumped down through the injection well” is missing an auxiliary, and “generator and turbine are combine” has an incorrect verb form. Some sentences also lack clear grammatical connections, as in “which convert hot water into steam.” Practise accurate passive forms for process descriptions—such as “cold water is pumped down” and “the water is heated”—and check agreement and articles in each sentence.
