IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The diagram illustrates the process to how electricity produce by using geothermal energy.
overall,it is clear that the process contain 5 major steps ,starting from cold water stroage and ending with generating electricity.
intially, the cold water is store into tank where the water is going to pump down to the pipe with the speed of 4.5 km.
Moreover, the cold water passes through a injection well where hot rocks are present and its also called geothermal zone .
conversly, the hot rocks boils the water and after this its pushes the water upward direction through production well and water stores into condenser.
subsequantly, the water converts into the steam then and turbine is start with the power of steam .
in addition, genertor is start thats present in the end of the turbine and power by the turbine
genertor is start to produce electricity
and after this the electricity runs into the towers.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You cover the main sequence from cold-water storage through underground heating to electricity generation, and the overview identifies the start and end of the process. The 4.5 km depth and the roles of the injection and production wells are also included. However, some stages are not described precisely: the water is heated as it passes through the geothermal zone, rather than the rocks simply “boil[ing]” it, and the condenser is described as where water is stored rather than where it is converted into steam. The final connection to the transmission pylon is mentioned, but the relationship between the turbine and generator could be clearer. More accurate explanation of these stages would make the account more complete and developed.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response follows the process in a generally sensible order, and the opening overview helps orient the reader. Sequencing expressions such as “initially,” “moreover,” and “after this” show an attempt to connect stages. However, the progression becomes repetitive and sometimes unclear, particularly in the final lines: “generator is start” is repeated, and the connection from turbine to electricity transmission is not smoothly expressed. Several transitions, including “conversely” and “in addition,” do not clearly signal the relationship between the steps. Organise the description into a clear introduction and overview followed by a continuous account of the stages, using fewer but more precise linking phrases and clearer references to each component.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant process vocabulary, including “injection well,” “production well,” “geothermal zone,” “condenser,” and “turbine,” which helps identify the diagram’s components. There are also attempts to use sequencing and technical language. However, spelling errors such as “stroage,” “intially,” and “genertor,” along with imprecise or unnatural choices such as “with the speed of 4.5 km” and “water stores into condenser,” reduce clarity. Some words are repeated, especially “water” and “generator,” where more precise phrasing could help. Aim to use accurate process collocations and check spelling carefully; for example, describe water as being pumped down to a depth of 4.5 km rather than moving at a speed.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and linked sentences to explain the stages, but control of sentence structure and verb forms is inconsistent. Examples include “the process contain 5 major steps,” “the cold water is store,” and “turbine is start,” where agreement or verb construction is faulty. Articles and sentence boundaries also need attention, as in “passes through a injection well” and the run-on sequence near the end beginning “in addition, genertor is start.” These errors sometimes make the process difficult to follow, although the intended sequence is usually recoverable. Practise accurate passive forms such as “is pumped” and “is heated,” and use complete sentences with consistent punctuation.
