IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
The diagram shows how the geothermal energy is used to produce the electricity. The total process is disussed in the diagram and illustrate the production of energy.
The begging of the process is like that first cold water pumped down to the injection well and then geothermal zone will move towards the production well and hot water pumped up to the condensor the working of condensor is to convert it into the steam.
Afterall the water is converted into the steam and move towards the turbine which start the turbine moving and generator is attaced with the turbine here the whole process of electricity is done and finally the generator makes the geothermal energy into electricity and then the whole process is done . So, we see that the whole process is very efficient andd convient.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
You identify the main stages in the correct general order: cold water enters the injection well, is heated underground, rises through the production well, and is used to drive a turbine and generator. However, the account is brief and does not fully explain the process or provide a clear overview of its key features. The condenser is described as converting water into steam, but the diagram labels the condenser and shows steam emerging from it; the underground depth of 4.5 km and the geothermal zone of hot rocks are also omitted. The claim that the process is “very efficient” is not supported by the diagram. The response is 14 words below the required minimum, which contributes to its limited development. Add a fuller, accurate account of each stage and avoid unsupported evaluation.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The stages are presented in a broadly logical sequence, and phrases such as “The beginning of the process” and “After all” help signal movement through the process. This gives the reader a basic sense of progression. However, the response is arranged as one dense block rather than clearly separated into an introduction, overview, and process details. Several long sentences join multiple stages with “and then” or “and,” making relationships between steps less clear; for example, the final sentence combines the turbine, generator, electricity production, and a concluding claim. Use separate paragraphs and clearer sentence boundaries, with linking expressions that show sequence precisely. This would make the organisation more consistent and reduce the repetitive use of “the whole process.”
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use some relevant process vocabulary, including “injection well,” “production well,” “geothermal zone,” “turbine,” and “generator,” so the reader can recognise the main components. However, the range is limited and several word-choice or spelling errors make the description less precise, such as “condensor,” “attaced,” “begging,” and “convenient.” Phrases such as “the working of condensor” and “makes the geothermal energy into electricity” are awkward or imprecise for describing a technical process. Aim for accurate collocations and use verbs that describe each stage directly, such as water being heated, steam driving a turbine, and a generator producing electricity. Proofreading spelling and avoiding repeated general phrases would improve clarity.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response attempts to connect stages using longer sentences, but these structures are often faulty, and most sentences contain grammatical problems. For example, “The beginning of the process is like that first cold water pumped down” lacks a clear grammatical structure, while “geothermal zone will move towards the production well” gives the zone an incorrect subject and omits needed articles. In “the turbine which start the turbine moving,” subject–verb agreement is incorrect, and the relative clause is awkwardly formed. Sentence boundaries and punctuation also need attention, particularly in the long final sentence. Practise writing one clear sentence for each stage, checking articles, verb forms, agreement, and punctuation before combining ideas into more complex structures.
