IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The diagram explains the steps for producing electricity in a geothermal power plant.

Overall, the process consist of five steps. Initiating with pumping down of cold water and ending with the generation of electricity. In between, the cold water has been converted into steam, where steam is used as a energy source.

In first step, cold water from the storage is pumped down 4.3 km to the injection well, from where it flows through the gepthermal zone which consist of hot rocks. Followed by geothermal zone the water heats up before reaching to the production well in third step.

The hot water in the production well then pumped up inside the condenser, where condenser do it's job of converting it into stem. Afterwards, the steam travel through a narrow space and reaches the turbine, where it power up the turbine to ratate. Turbine is connected to the generator and the rotation of turbine power up the generator. Finally electricity is produced and directly sent to the surrounding areas.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You cover the main sequence from pumping cold water underground to generating electricity, and the overview correctly identifies the conversion of water into steam as central to the process. The account also distinguishes the injection and production wells and explains the turbine-generator relationship. However, some details are less accurate or fully developed: the diagram gives a depth of 4.5 km, not 4.3 km, and it shows steam being released at the condenser rather than the condenser simply “converting” the water. The final claim that electricity is sent “to the surrounding areas” is not shown; the diagram indicates transmission lines and a pylon. More precise reporting of these features would make the summary more complete and firmly grounded in the visual.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall progression, moving from an overview to the underground stages and then to the equipment at the surface. Sequencing phrases such as “In first step,” “Afterwards,” and “Finally” help the reader follow the process, and the paragraphing separates the overview from the detailed account. This meets the lower-band expectation of a coherent arrangement and shows some of the flexibility associated with stronger cohesion. However, a few links are awkward or unclear: “Followed by geothermal zone” does not smoothly connect the heating stage to the production well, while “where condenser do it’s job” repeats the location rather than clarifying the sequence. Use more precise transitions and references, and ensure each sentence connects cleanly to the next.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of process vocabulary, including “injection well,” “production well,” “geothermal zone,” “condenser,” and “turbine.” These terms make the stages recognisable, and phrases such as “pumped down” and “pumped up” communicate direction. There are also some inaccurate word choices and spelling errors that do not prevent understanding but reduce precision: “stem” for “steam,” “ratate” for “rotate,” and “narrow space” for the pipe carrying steam. “Storage” is less specific than “storage tank,” and “power up” is informal and imprecise in this technical description. Aim for accurate spelling and standard process collocations, especially when describing how one component operates another.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including clauses with “where” and “from where,” and the sequence is generally understandable. However, some grammatical errors remain across the response. The overview says “the process consist” rather than “the process consists,” and “In first step” needs an article. In “the hot water … then pumped up,” the passive auxiliary is missing; similarly, “where condenser do” has agreement and article problems. The sentence beginning “Overall” is also a fragment because “Initiating with…” is not attached to a complete clause. These errors rarely obscure the process, but improving subject–verb agreement, articles, passive forms, and sentence completeness would make the description more controlled.
