IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The diagram illustrates the process of generating electricity from geothermal energy. Overall, it is apparent that cold water pumped down into the geothermal region of earth into injection well where water temperature increased and send into condenser to convert into steam form to run turbine to generate electricity.
Intially, cold water pumped down into the injection well which is 4.5km deep where the temperature is high. In this region temperature is high due to hot rocks which is also known as geothermal region. After passing through this region the water temperature raise and reached the production well where the hot water pumped up and send into condenser, where the hot water condensed to get steam to run turbine.
To begin with, the turbine is powered by steam which is connected with generator to produce electricity. It is a renewable energy. Furthermore, the electricity is transfer to national grid station from where the electricity transferred to consumer.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You identify the process as geothermal electricity generation and describe its main sequence: cold water goes down the injection well, is heated by hot rocks, rises through the production well, and is used to produce steam that powers a turbine and generator. The 4.5 km depth is also reported accurately. This gives the response a relevant overview and covers the central stages. However, some details are unclear or inaccurate: the water is not sent directly into the condenser as described in the overview; it first rises through the production well, and the condenser is shown releasing steam. The final claim about a national grid station and consumers is not supported by the diagram, which shows a connection to a transmission pylon. A clearer, more complete account of the diagram’s stages would strengthen the response.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has an overall sequence that is easy to follow, moving from an overview to the underground heating stage and then to electricity generation. Paragraphing also separates the process description from the final turbine and generator details. Linking expressions such as “Overall,” “After passing through this region,” and “Furthermore” help connect ideas. However, the progression is not always smooth: “To begin with” appears after the preceding paragraph has already described the initial stages, and the final sentence shifts to consumers, a detail not shown in the diagram. Some references, such as “this region,” require the reader to infer the intended location. Organising the stages in one consistent sequence and using clearer references would make cohesion more reliable.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use a suitable range of process vocabulary, including “geothermal,” “injection well,” “production well,” “condenser,” “turbine,” and “generator.” These terms help communicate the main stages, and the meaning is generally clear. There are, however, some inaccurate or awkward word choices and collocations. For example, “the hot water condensed to get steam” does not describe the diagram precisely, while “electricity is transfer to national grid station” is both unnatural and unsupported by the visual. “Temperature raise” and “send into condenser” also show limited control of word forms and phrasing. Aim for precise process verbs such as “is heated,” “rises,” and “is converted into steam,” and check spelling, including “Initially.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a relative clause in “the injection well which is 4.5km deep” and a sequence of linked process clauses. The overall meaning can usually be understood, but grammatical errors occur across the response and sometimes make relationships between stages less clear. Examples include missing articles and auxiliaries in “cold water pumped down into the injection well,” the incorrect verb form in “water temperature raise,” and the agreement error in “the electricity is transfer.” The long overview sentence also lacks clear grammatical structure, particularly around “into injection well where water temperature increased.” Practise forming complete passive clauses consistently, such as “Cold water is pumped down” and “The water is heated,” while varying sentence structures accurately.
