IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
The chart illustartes that gethermal energy is used to produce electricity.
Overall the geothermal power plant is more interesting process. The cold water enter down to earth then the cold water change in hot water . The pumped send the water into condenser then steam can start the turbine after this process turbine can produces electricity then we use the electricity in your daily life. Now a days electricity is more significant in your life due to everything is depend on electricity.
Now we can summarrise the geothermal power plant through pie chart.
The process is start from cold water the water can send under th earth like 4.5km then the injection divided the water into three wave that the place the cold water can meet the geothermal zone then the production well. The hot water pumped up into the condenser after the process condenser convert into steam then the steam can start the turbine that is way to produce electricity. Turbine connect to the generator that can produce electricity that the generator is connected to tower in this way the process is repeated same.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You identify the main stages, including water being pumped underground, heated by hot rocks, brought back up, and used to generate electricity. The 4.5 km depth is also reported accurately. However, the overview is unclear and includes irrelevant commentary about the process being “more interesting” and electricity’s importance in daily life. Some details are inaccurate or unsupported: the water is not divided into “three wave,” and the diagram does not show the process being repeated. The account also blurs the roles of the condenser, turbine and generator. To make the response more complete, give a concise overview of the transformation from cold water to steam and then electricity, and describe each stage in the correct order without adding claims absent from the diagram.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
The response has separate paragraphs and uses basic sequencing words such as “then” and “after this process,” so the reader can follow parts of the process. However, progression is not consistently clear: the second paragraph mixes an overview with personal commentary, and the final paragraph repeats several stages rather than developing a clean, step-by-step account. Linking phrases are often repetitive or awkward, while references such as “this way” and “that is way” do not clearly identify what they refer to. Organise the report into a brief introduction, a clear overview, and a chronological description. Use precise links such as “Next,” “Once heated,” and “Finally,” and avoid repeating the same information.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use some relevant process vocabulary, including “injection well,” “production well,” “condenser,” “steam,” and “generator,” which helps communicate the diagram’s subject. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate, such as “the injection divided the water into three wave” and “the process is repeated same.” Spelling errors, including “illustartes,” “gethermal,” and “summarrise,” also reduce accuracy. Some everyday commentary (“more significant in your life”) is not suitable for a concise process description. Build a more precise vocabulary for describing movement and transformation, and check spelling and word forms. For example, use “flows through” and “is converted into steam” where appropriate.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response attempts to connect ideas in longer sentences, for example, “The hot water pumped up into the condenser after the process condenser convert into steam,” but these structures are often faulty and make relationships between stages unclear. There are recurring problems with verb forms and agreement: “water enter,” “turbine can produces,” and “condenser convert.” Articles and sentence boundaries are also inconsistent, as in “The process is start from cold water.” Most sentences rely on simple clauses joined together, with limited accurate control of more complex forms. Practise using passive structures for processes—“Cold water is pumped down” and “The water is heated”—and separate each stage into a complete sentence with correct subject–verb agreement and punctuation.
