IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The diagram illustrates how electricity is generated using geothermal energy.
Overall, the process involves 5 main stages, begining with cold water being pumped downward and ending with electricity generated using generator and turbine. Additionally, in geothermal zone when cold water is passed due to hot rocks in those areas the temperature gradually rises and the rotating mechanism of turbine powers the generator.
Initially, cold water is pumped down through the injection well which is 4.5 km in length. After that the cold water is passed through geothermal zone which gradually increases the temperature of water to a certain level which is then supplied to the production well.
Furthermore, hot water is pumped upward through the production well towards condenser. The condenser produces steam from the hot water which is transfered to generator. Moreover, the steam is forces the turbine to rotate which powers generator and produces electricity. At last, the generated electricity is transfered different available towers.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You identify the process as a sequence and include several key stages: cold water is sent down the 4.5 km injection well, heated in the geothermal zone, and brought back up through the production well. The overview also recognises that the process ends with electricity generation. However, some details are unclear or inaccurate: the steam is transferred to the turbine, not directly to the generator, and the final reference to “different available towers” is not supported by the diagram, which shows a transmission pylon. The overview’s claim that there are five main stages is not clearly matched to the full sequence, and the condenser’s role could be explained more precisely. Covering the turbine-generator relationship and final output accurately would make the account more complete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction and overview are followed by a description of the underground stages and then the equipment at the surface. Sequencing expressions such as “Initially,” “After that,” and “Furthermore” help the reader follow the process, and the progression is generally logical. This already gives the account a coherent structure. However, some linking is mechanical, with several transitions simply announcing the next step, and “Moreover” introduces a detail that would fit more naturally into the preceding explanation of steam and the turbine. The relationship between the condenser, steam, turbine, and generator is also not consistently clear. Use fewer formulaic transitions and connect each stage through precise references to the equipment and material being transferred.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of process vocabulary, including “injection well,” “geothermal zone,” “production well,” “condenser,” and “pumped upward.” These terms make the subject recognisable, and “temperature gradually rises” conveys the heating stage. Some word choices and collocations are less precise, however. “The rotating mechanism of turbine” is awkward, “the steam is forces the turbine” uses an unsuitable form, and “different available towers” does not accurately name the structure shown. There are also spelling errors in “begining” and “transfered.” Aim for standard technical collocations and check spelling; for example, describe steam as driving a turbine and electricity as being transmitted through power lines to a pylon.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The response includes both simple statements and attempts at longer, more complex sentences, such as the overview sentence beginning “Additionally, in geothermal zone…” and the explanation of water passing through the hot rocks. The main sequence is usually understandable, and errors do not generally prevent the reader from following it. Some grammatical problems remain: “begining with” does not agree with “the process,” “using generator” is missing an article, and “the steam is forces the turbine” has an incorrect verb construction. The sentence beginning “After that the cold water is passed…” also has an unclear clause structure. Practise accurate passive forms and article use, and break down longer explanations so that each clause has a clear subject and verb.
