Student answer (Band 6.5)
The thought of purchasing automobiles by a large number of individuals has become increasingly common. This is because change in lifestyle has taken mammoth dimensions. This essay will clearly state the issues with this trend and give optimal solutions to mitigate this problem.
To commence with, the problems faced due to excessive car purchase are air pollution and
traffic congestion which creates a formidable situation for the public. To expound, since most of the cars use gasoline as a fuel, they cause substantial greenhouse gas emissions which pollute the environment. Furthermore, since size of the roads are the same but the number of vehicles are rising with time which has congested the roads substantially. To exemplify, in 2025, an experiment was conducted in India which showcased that the total count of vehicles doubled in the past five years which has consequently doubled the level of air pollution in Delhi. Hence the above example vividly illustrates how high levels of vehicle purchase cause problems.
To address the second question, people can be motivated to use public transit through proper education along with improving transport infrastructure. To elaborate, not only should the authorities raise awareness by launching educational media campaigns, but also improve transport accessibility with reliable service infrastructure. Thus, the aforementioned steps substantiates how the issue can be solved.
In conclusion, this essay has clearly discussed that air quality deterioration and heavy traffic
flow are the problems associated with the escalating trend of buying cars; nevertheless, when the public is encouraged to use public transport through improving awareness and accessibility, these problems can be significantly alleviated.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response is completely off-topic. The prompt asks for a discussion on whether children should be allowed to make their own choices regarding everyday matters like food and clothing. Instead, the essay discusses the environmental and traffic-related problems caused by the increasing purchase of automobiles. Because the response fails to address the specific task instructions entirely, it cannot be evaluated for task achievement in relation to the prompt provided. According to IELTS criteria, a response that is off-topic must be penalised heavily in this category as it does not address the requirements of the task.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
Despite being off-topic, the essay demonstrates a clear structure. It uses paragraphing effectively to separate the introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'To commence with', 'Furthermore', 'To elaborate', and 'In conclusion' are used to link ideas. The progression of ideas within the essay is logical, even though the content itself is irrelevant to the prompt. The use of referencing is generally clear, and the flow between sentences is maintained throughout the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task. The student employs a range of academic-style vocabulary, such as 'formidable', 'substantial', 'mitigate', 'accessibility', and 'deterioration'. While some collocations are slightly awkward (e.g., 'purchasing automobiles by a large number of individuals'), the meaning is always clear. There is an attempt to use less common lexical items, which shows a reasonable level of control, though the choice of words is entirely disconnected from the actual topic of child development and decision-making.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The essay displays a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'since size of the roads are the same' (subject-verb agreement) and 'these steps substantiates' (subject-verb agreement). However, these errors do not impede communication. The writer shows an ability to construct complex sentences using subordinating conjunctions like 'since' and 'although'. Punctuation is generally accurate, and the overall control of grammar is sufficient to convey the writer's intended message clearly.
