Student answer (Band 7.0)

A large number of people in modern society are purchasing automobiles in recent times. While the negative outcomes of this escalating trend are significant air pollution and exponential growth of traffic congestion, employing public transit is the optimal solution to mitigate this problem, which can be encouraged by effective public education and reinforcing transport infrastructure.

To commence with, the problems faced due to excessive car purchase are air pollution and

traffic congestion which create a formidable situation for the public. To expound, since most of the cars use gasoline as a fuel, they cause substantial greenhouse gas emissions which drastically pollute the environment. Furthermore, with an increased influx of cars the roads have become congested because the size of the roads is the same as in the past. To exemplify, in 2025, the total count of vehicles doubled in the past five years which has consequently doubled the level of air pollution in Delhi. Hence the above example vividly illustrates how high levels of vehicle purchase cause problems.

Additionally, to alleviate the outlined challenges,

the local populace can be motivated to use public transit because it is an environmentally sustainable and economically viable alternative. To elaborate, not only should the authorities raise awareness by launching educational media campaigns, but also considerably improve transport accessibility with reliable service infrastructure. Thus, the aforementioned steps substantiates how the issue can be solved.

In conclusion, although air quality deterioration and heavy traffic flow are the undeniable issues associated with the escalating trend of buying cars, with considerable public encouragement to use mass transport these problems can be efficiently minimized.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response is completely off-topic. The prompt asks for a discussion on whether allowing children to make their own choices leads to self-centeredness or is beneficial for their development. However, the essay discusses the environmental impact of purchasing automobiles and public transport solutions. Because the response fails to address the task prompt entirely, it cannot be assessed for task achievement in relation to the specific question asked. In an official IELTS examination, this would be marked as a non-attempt or irrelevant response, resulting in a very low score for Task Response.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

Despite being off-topic, the essay itself is structured logically. It uses clear paragraphing with an introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'To commence with', 'Furthermore', 'Additionally', and 'In conclusion' are used effectively to guide the reader through the argument. The progression of ideas within the paragraphs is logical, even though the content does not relate to the assigned prompt.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.5

The vocabulary is quite strong and demonstrates a good range of academic collocations. Phrases such as 'escalating trend', 'formidable situation', 'environmentally sustainable', and 'economically viable' show a level of sophistication. There is a clear attempt to use precise language, and the word choice is generally accurate and appropriate for an academic essay, even if the topic is incorrect.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

The essay displays a good variety of complex sentence structures. The writer uses subordinate clauses ('While the negative outcomes...', 'since most of the cars...') and passive voice effectively. Grammatical control is generally high, with very few errors. Punctuation is used correctly to manage sentence flow. The grammatical range is sufficient to support a higher band, as the errors are minimal and do not impede communication.
