IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people believe that allowing children to make their own choices on everyday matters (such as food, clothes and entertainment) is likely to result in a society of individuals who only think about their own wishes. Other people believe that it is important for children to make decisions about matters that affect them.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Nowadays, the topic of allowing children to make their own wishes has become a debatable issue which generated polarized opinions among the public. However, some people deem that this trend may build an environment in which people only care about themselves, but opponents reckon that children should have to decide everything according to their own wishes that affect them significantly. I will delve into both contrasting viewpoints before embarking to the relevant conclusion.

There is plethora of reasons that support the statement of proponents. The first and foremost reason that strikes in my mind is related to the immaturity of the kids. To explain it, children's minds are not developed to make the decisions that are better for them because they do not know what is good or bad for them as they never experienced the difficulties of life and if they decide everything by themselves then they may adopt the habit of that thing and will continue to do this in the future, which will affect their future badly. Secondly, this may lead to bad behavior among children, if they become selfish and do not listen to their parents or do not respect them then automatically they make distance from their loved ones and socially they are not considered an obedient child.

On the other hand, opponents have also their valid justifications. Primarily, if children decide all their small decisions then they get responsible which will further help them. To exemplify, if a juvenile making all his decisions, like what he should wear, eat or study then he will become more responsible because his way of thinking will be affected that leads to make him more bold in some critical situations. Another considerable reason is that kids can learn some essential skills for their further life . As, this fosters to think them critically or rationally and they can also develop good decision-making skills in them.

However, according to my viewpoint, it is fruitful for the young ones to make their decision according to their choices as they can become more responsible and develop some crucial skills also.

In conclusion, after giving the aforementioned points it is clear that no doubt, by making decisions by themselves, children may not show respect for others but this particular skill makes them more responsible for tackling any difficult situation.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both viewpoints and providing a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant, though some arguments, such as the link between decision-making and 'bad behavior,' are slightly under-developed and could benefit from more specific examples. The position is consistent throughout the essay. To reach a higher band, ensure that the connection between the examples provided (e.g., choosing clothes) and the broader societal implications is more explicitly articulated.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two viewpoints. Cohesive devices such as 'The first and foremost reason,' 'Secondly,' and 'On the other hand' are used to guide the reader. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical, and there are minor issues with referencing, such as the phrase 'the statement of proponents,' which is slightly awkward. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The range of vocabulary is adequate for the task. You use some good collocations like 'polarized opinions' and 'critical situations.' However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and phrasing, such as 'there is plethora of reasons' (should be 'a plethora') and 'if a juvenile making all his decisions' (should be 'if a juvenile makes'). Some vocabulary is repetitive, such as the frequent use of 'decisions' and 'wishes.' Expanding your range of synonyms would improve the flow and sophistication of your writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement and article usage (e.g., 'if a juvenile making all his decisions' lacks a main verb; 'the topic of allowing children to make their own wishes' is slightly unnatural). Punctuation is generally functional, but some sentences are slightly run-on. To improve, focus on ensuring that complex sentences are grammatically sound and that articles are used consistently.
