Some people believe that allowing children to make their own choices on everyday matters (such as food, clothes and entertainment) is likely to result in a society of individuals who only think about their own wishes. Other people believe that it is important for children to make decisions about matters that affect them.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In this contemporary era, learning to make decision is the most crucial part of life as it may affect the life of an individual. Some people believe that children making their own decision may result into the society full of people only concerned about their own comfort and priorities. While, few critics think young ones should make their choices as it can affect their life in future. Along with my perspective, both the views are discussed further in the essay.

Allowing children to make choices can affect society in many ways. Firstly, if young individuals are given choices on regular basis then it can lead to behavioral changes. Children making all the decision at very early age may affect their behavior and make them stubborn. This stubborn behavior may become problematic for their families. As the habit of making own decision could make them disobedient which can further lead them to make wrong choices in life. Secondly, access to make life decision at very early age can lead to loss of humanitarian behavior making them to behave immaturely. children will forget moral values because of selfishness. If juveniles get access to make choices solely then they won't think about others. There would be loss of kindness. To illustrate this, in a family where there are two sibling and if they have to share their food. Independent choices won't allow them to share their things with siblings as there would be lack of kindness.

On contrary, children should make personal choices as it may help them to become independent. Making decisions on their own would help them to face the real world and problems on their own without any peer support. making own choices would make them stronger enough to face the challenges and solve them. Secondly, independent decision may help them to become mature at an early age. Children making own choices without peer pressure would help them to live free and happy life. Also some choice made under peer pressure may make an individual stress and exhausted. To exemplify, choice such as choosing career should be solely independent this leads to happy and free life without stress.

To conclude, young individual making own choices on daily matter may result into behavioral changes, it makes them stubborn and disobedient. However, i believe that children should make their choices on their own as it makes them independent, and stronger to face challenges, leading to a happy life in future.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both perspectives and providing a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant, though some arguments, such as the link between independent decision-making and a 'loss of humanitarian behavior,' are slightly underdeveloped and could benefit from more logical explanation. The position is consistent throughout the essay. To reach a higher band, ensure that the connection between the examples (like sharing food) and the broader societal impact is more explicitly articulated to avoid over-generalization.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two viewpoints. Cohesive devices such as 'Firstly,' 'Secondly,' and 'On contrary' are used, though some transitions feel slightly mechanical. Referencing is generally clear, although the flow between sentences could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words to connect ideas more fluidly. The progression of ideas is evident, but the essay would benefit from more sophisticated cohesive ties to improve the overall readability.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their ideas clearly. There is an attempt to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'stubborn,' 'disobedient,' and 'peer pressure.' However, there are some inaccuracies in collocation and word choice, such as 'access to make life decision' instead of 'the opportunity to make life decisions' and 'humanitarian behavior' which is slightly misused in this context. The range is sufficient for the task, but more precise and varied vocabulary would be needed to reach a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with articles ('a society of individuals,' 'the real world'), pluralization ('two sibling'), and verb forms ('making own choices... make them stronger'). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are minor errors in sentence construction. The control of grammar is sufficient to communicate ideas, but the frequency of errors prevents a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and article usage would significantly improve the accuracy of the writing.
