Some people believe that allowing children to make their own choices on everyday matters (such as food, clothes and entertainment) is likely to result in a society of individuals who only think about their own wishes. Other people believe that it is important for children to make decisions about matters that affect them.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is believed by some individuals that giving permission to children to take their own decisions about their activities may make them selfish while others think that it is useful for children to make their own choices in everyday life. In my opinion, there should be a balance approach.

One main reason why some people believe that allowing children to make their own decisions for food, clothes and entertainment is about to create a community who gives preference to their own wishes is that it becomes children's habit with time. When they start making their own decisions at early age, they do not like others preferences in the society. As a result, the potential of conflicts in the society may increases due to everyone's own wish.

On the other hand, others consider it important to give children opportunity to make decisions about matters that affect them because it enhances confidence of young ones for decision making. If children start taking small decisions regarding daily activities, they can easily handle difficult situations in the future. In this way, they can be more successful in their life.

I think that a balanced approach may work well. Children are allowed to make some basic regular choices so that decision making power is developed in them; however, some hard decisions are made by elders which creates a habit for considering others decision.

In conclusion, although giving power to children to make decision is necessary, the understanding with others should also part of youngsters' habits. I think that some decisions are made by parents or elders and some by children to create a balance.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both viewpoints and providing a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant, though the development is somewhat brief. For instance, the argument regarding children becoming selfish is introduced but lacks a concrete example to fully illustrate the point. Similarly, the benefits of decision-making are mentioned, but the explanation remains at a general level. To reach a higher band, you should expand on your points with specific, illustrative examples or more detailed reasoning. Your position is consistent throughout the essay, which is a strength.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two viewpoints and your own opinion. Cohesive devices such as 'On the other hand', 'As a result', and 'In conclusion' are used to guide the reader. However, the flow between some sentences is slightly mechanical, and the referencing could be more precise. For example, the transition between the second and third paragraphs could be smoother to better highlight the contrast between the two perspectives.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully using terms like 'preference', 'enhances', and 'balanced approach'. However, there are some instances of slightly unnatural word choices or minor errors, such as 'balance approach' (should be 'balanced approach') and 'understanding with others should also part of youngsters' habits' (which is grammatically awkward and lacks precision). To improve, focus on using more sophisticated collocations and ensuring that your word choices are contextually accurate.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text. Examples include 'is about to create' (which is an incorrect collocation here), 'potential of conflicts... may increases' (subject-verb agreement error), and 'some hard decisions are made by elders which creates a habit' (missing comma and agreement error). These errors do not impede communication, but they do limit the score. Increasing the frequency of error-free complex sentences would help improve your score in this criterion.
