Student answer (Band 6.0)

Where allowing children to make their own choices or not is a widely debated social issue of our daily lives. Some people believe it promotes selfishness when they grow up. But others believe that this practice should be adopted for positive development. In my opinion, Children should be allowed to make their own decisions of everyday life to promote personality development, confidence and improve decision power.

On one hand, people think that children should not make their own choices as it make them insensitive and stubborn. They become use to do what ever they like and never listen to parents later in life. Moreover, people consider children as immature . They are prone to suffer in case of taking wrong decisions. For example, eating unhealthy food of their choice may lead to poor health. Likewise playing games on line may cause difficulties in studies and wasting time.

On the other hand, some people believe that children should take their decisions of everyday life to promote confidence and decision power. Children learn from mistakes. For instance if they bought a wrong dress they will remember it and not repeat it in future. Furthermore, permission of making small decisions gives children a feeling of freedom of expressing their emotions and choices and avoidance of frustration in children.

In conclusion, the children should be given liberty to make their own choices. This is essential for personality development and mental wellbeing of the children. This practice promotes responsible and wise individuals in society by making right decisions in future.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both viewpoints and providing a clear personal opinion. The position is consistent throughout the essay. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. While you provide examples like 'eating unhealthy food' or 'buying a wrong dress', these points could be expanded further to reach a higher band. The conclusion effectively summarizes your stance, but the overall depth of argumentation is more characteristic of a Band 6.0, as some points remain slightly superficial rather than fully extended.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You use cohesive devices such as 'On one hand', 'On the other hand', 'Moreover', and 'Furthermore' to link ideas. However, the transition between the opening sentence and the rest of the introduction is slightly awkward, and some cohesive links feel a bit mechanical. The progression of ideas is generally clear, but the flow could be improved by using more varied linking phrases to connect sentences within paragraphs more fluidly.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing you to express your ideas clearly. You use some relevant topic-specific terms like 'personality development', 'mental wellbeing', and 'insensitive'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'decision power' (better: 'decision-making skills') and 'use to do' (should be 'used to doing'). The range is sufficient for the task, but you rely on relatively simple vocabulary, and there is limited evidence of less common or more sophisticated lexical items.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors throughout the text. For example, 'Where allowing children...' is an incorrect sentence starter, 'it make them' should be 'it makes them', and 'permission of making' is better phrased as 'allowing children to make'. Punctuation is generally functional, but there are minor slips. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of prepositions and gerunds after certain verbs.
