Student answer (Band 6.0)

Some argue that freedom of choices in everyday stuffs like food, clothes and entertainment may make children self-centred, whereas others think that allowing them to make decisions is essential for their growth. This essay will discuss both the aspects before explaining, why I believe age-appropriate independece has a crucial role to play in development of child.

On the one hand, decisive independece in children's growing age is important to improve their decision-making skills, communication and confidence. Allowing them to determine what they want shape them more desciplined and satisfied human-being. For example, to choose from multiple options in early age can develop their opinions in certain matters. After all, expressive personality is important to be confident. These qualities ultimately help them to streghten their educational performance. Furthermore, If parents restrict children to make decisions, can lead to introvert personality and in a long run they find difficult to communicate and express their view points to others.

On the other hand, too much freedom leads to stubborn and arrogant behaviour of a child. In formative years, children do not have maturity to select right options for them all the time. Parential support and advice in needed to avoid consequences of freedom. For instance, children always like junk and oily food, if parents allow them to choose unhealthy food everytime then it compromises their health. These habits might affect their future ; perhaps they will become disrespectful and impatient due to unavailibility of their prefered choices.

To sum up, parents should allow children to make decisions but in balanced manner. They should ensure that they do not hamper their growth by restrictions and rules.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both viewpoints and providing a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant and generally well-supported, such as the example regarding junk food to illustrate the potential negative consequences of excessive freedom. However, some arguments could be more thoroughly developed; for instance, the link between decision-making and 'educational performance' is mentioned but not fully explained. The position is consistent throughout, and the essay maintains a clear focus on the topic. To reach a higher band, ensure that each supporting point is fully explored with more specific detail or logical progression.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, with a discernible introduction, body paragraphs for each viewpoint, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'Furthermore', and 'To sum up' are used to guide the reader through the argument. However, the use of these devices is sometimes a bit mechanical, and there are minor issues with referencing and flow, such as the slightly abrupt transition between the benefits of independence and the potential for introversion. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear, and the paragraphing is appropriate for the task.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The range of vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their ideas clearly. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'formative years' and 'independece' (noting the spelling error). However, there are several spelling mistakes ('stuffs', 'desciplined', 'streghten', 'Parential', 'unavailibility', 'prefered') and some word choice issues, such as 'everyday stuffs' which is too informal. While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more careful proofreading and a wider range of precise, academic vocabulary to reach a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the writer attempts complex sentences, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement and article usage (e.g., 'If parents restrict children to make decisions, can lead to introvert personality'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, with some misplaced commas and semicolons. Despite these errors, the meaning is generally clear, and the grammar does not significantly impede the reader's understanding. To improve, the writer should focus on mastering basic sentence construction and reducing the frequency of errors in complex structures.
