IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people believe that allowing children to make their own choices on everyday matters (such as food, clothes and entertainment) is likely to result in a society of individuals who only think about their own wishes. Other people believe that it is important for children to make decisions about matters that affect them.
Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 7.5)
People hold differing views about whether children should be allowed to make their own decisions about everyday matters. While some argue that excessive freedom may encourage selfish behaviour, others believe that decision-making is essential for children’s development. In my view, children should be given an appropriate degree of choice, provided that parents continue to set reasonable boundaries.
On the one hand, allowing children complete freedom in matters such as food, clothing and entertainment could encourage them to prioritise personal desires over wider responsibilities. Young children, in particular, may lack the maturity to consider the consequences of their choices. For example, if children were permitted to choose their meals without parental guidance, many might consistently prefer unhealthy food simply because it is more enjoyable. Similarly, unrestricted access to entertainment could lead them to spend excessive amounts of time playing games rather than studying or interacting with family members. If this behaviour becomes habitual, children may grow accustomed to satisfying their own preferences without considering the needs of others.
On the other hand, giving children some control over decisions that directly affect them can play an important role in developing independence and responsibility. Making choices teaches children to evaluate alternatives, accept consequences and gradually become more confident in their judgement. For instance, allowing a child to choose between several suitable outfits or decide how to spend part of their free time gives them a sense of autonomy without exposing them to serious risks. Such experiences can also prepare them for adulthood, when they will be expected to make far more significant decisions independently.
In my opinion, the most effective approach is therefore a balanced one. Parents should not control every minor aspect of a child’s life, nor should children be given unlimited freedom. Instead, adults should provide clear boundaries while allowing children to make age-appropriate choices within them.
In conclusion, although excessive freedom may encourage self-centred behaviour, controlled decision-making is highly beneficial because it helps children develop independence, judgement and responsibility.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The response fully addresses all parts of the prompt. You have clearly discussed both sides of the argument—the potential for selfishness and the benefits of independence—and provided a clear, consistent personal opinion. The ideas are well-developed and supported with relevant examples, such as the mention of food choices and the development of autonomy. The position is maintained throughout the essay, and the conclusion effectively synthesises the main points. The structure is logical, and the content is directly relevant to the task requirements, demonstrating a strong grasp of the topic.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The essay is logically organised with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central topic, and the transition between paragraphs is smooth, using effective cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'Similarly', and 'In conclusion'. Referencing is clear, and the use of linking words is natural rather than mechanical. The paragraphing is appropriate, with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs exploring the opposing views, a paragraph for your own opinion, and a conclusion. The flow of information is easy to follow, and the logical structure supports the overall argument effectively.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to discuss the topic with precision. Phrases such as 'prioritise personal desires', 'lack the maturity', 'evaluate alternatives', and 'age-appropriate choices' show a good command of language. The vocabulary is natural and appropriate for an academic context. While there are no major errors in word choice or collocation, the range is solid rather than exceptionally sophisticated. The language used is precise enough to convey your arguments clearly without any ambiguity, meeting the requirements for a high band score in this criterion.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
The essay displays a wide range of grammatical structures, including complex sentences with conditional clauses ('if children were permitted...') and subordinate clauses ('although excessive freedom may...'). The majority of sentences are error-free, and your control over punctuation and syntax is excellent. There are no significant grammatical errors that impede communication. The use of modal verbs and varied sentence beginnings contributes to a fluent and professional tone. The grammatical accuracy is consistent throughout the piece, reflecting a high level of proficiency.
