Student answer (Band 6.0)

Children are considered assets of a society as they play an essential role in leading communities when they grow up. Therefore, it is important to teach skillsets which make them valuable member of a society. This is the reason some people believe that when children are allowed to take decision in everyday matters, they start thinking about their own wishes. I do agree with the given statement to some extent. I believe that when children start making decision in matters that directly affect them, they actually start prioritizing their wishes over others. This attitude can make them selfish and with the passage of time, the element of empathy can start diminishing. This would be quiet harmful to the society because if everyone starts thing about oneself, this would can create the situation of chaos and conflict. This whole situation could take us back to Hobbes era where people had no empathy for each other.

On the contrary, there is a group of people who argue that it is important for children to make decisions about matters that affect them. They believe that this makes children confident from an early age. Also, this attitude of taking decision helps children developing proactive approach rather than reactive where children if make mistake, learn from it instead of blaming others. Moreover, as they grow up, their decision making ability get stronger which help them in their career. For instance, such children, when they grow up, become good politician and entrepreneurs as they know how to take decisions, and learn and own their mistakes.

Lastly, I believe that children must be allowed to make decision; however, they should be monitored, at the same time, so that they may not end up developing selfish and materialized attitude.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both views and providing a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant, such as the potential for selfishness versus the development of confidence and decision-making skills. However, the development is somewhat uneven; the argument regarding the 'Hobbes era' is a bit abstract and could have been better linked to the prompt's focus on everyday matters like food and clothes. The conclusion is clear, though it could have been more thoroughly integrated with the preceding arguments to provide a more comprehensive synthesis of the two perspectives.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, with each focusing on a distinct aspect of the prompt. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'On the contrary', 'Also', and 'Moreover', which help guide the reader through the arguments. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and there are minor issues with referencing and flow, such as the sentence 'this would can create the situation of chaos', which disrupts the logical progression. Overall, the paragraphing is appropriate, and the progression of ideas is generally clear throughout the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their ideas clearly. There are attempts to use less common vocabulary, such as 'proactive', 'reactive', and 'materialized', though some word choices are slightly awkward or imprecise, such as 'materialized attitude' instead of 'materialistic'. There are also minor errors in word form, such as 'valuable member' instead of 'valuable members'. While the range is sufficient to convey the intended meaning, it lacks the precision and flexibility required for a higher band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement and article usage (e.g., 'take decision' instead of 'take decisions', 'if make mistake' instead of 'if they make a mistake', and 'this would can create'). These errors are noticeable but do not impede communication. To reach a higher band, the writer needs to demonstrate more consistent control over complex structures and reduce the frequency of basic grammatical slips.
