IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people believe that allowing children to make their own choices on everyday matters (such as food, clothes and entertainment) is likely to result in a society of individuals who only think about their own wishes. Other people believe that it is important for children to make decisions about matters that affect them.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The society in which we are currently living is getting more advanced day by day which allows children especially teenagers to make their own choices regarding their life activites to recognize themselves and their interests in food, clothes and entertainment. This also results as children now-a-days are getting more stubborn and violent when it comes to their unncessary demands and bad choices.

However, the believe that the children must be provided appropriate freedom to make their own decisions about their particular matters specifically those related to their life is not negative itself. The career and job choices should be freely handed over to the individuals as they better know their abilities and persuasiveness towards a particular field. This capability is developed from a young age when children are allowed to give choices about their favourite food, or clothes or places etc. This allows them to think mindfully about themselves and what better suits them best.

Children who are taught to make self choices are likely to become carefree regarding their family members as they don't like to take advices from anyone and try to pursue what they think they should. This turns into a habit of not listening to elders or parents and not even asking them about their guidance as well.

Although, this becomes a negative behavior of not listening to parents' advices, if self-decisiveness is utilized in a good way, it empowers a personality with positive attributes like self-confidence, self-decisiveness, and self-sufficiency as well.

As for my opinion, I personally believe a child must be allowed to make his or own choices in life with appropriate guidances from elders side by side.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses both views required by the prompt, discussing the potential negative outcomes of children making everyday choices, such as becoming stubborn or self-centered, as well as the positive aspects like fostering independence and career decision-making. A clear personal position is presented in the final paragraph, where the writer suggests a balanced approach involving guidance from elders. However, some of the ideas are slightly repetitive or under-developed, particularly in the discussion regarding family dynamics and disobedience. The explanation tends to loop back to similar points without fully extending the arguments. Nevertheless, all parts of the task are addressed, earning a solid Band 6.5.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a recognisable introduction, body paragraphs discussing opposing viewpoints, and a conclusion containing the writer's opinion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas, such as the negative perspective in paragraph one, the positive career/food choices in paragraph two, and the social behavioral consequences in paragraphs three and four. However, the logical progression is occasionally hindered by abrupt transitions and mechanical cohesive devices like 'Although, this becomes...' and 'As for my opinion'. Referencing is sometimes unclear, such as the pronoun use in 'This turns into a habit'. Overall, the organization is clear enough to follow easily, fitting the Band 6 descriptors well.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common lexical items such as 'persuasiveness', 'self-decisiveness', and 'self-sufficiency'. However, there are noticeable inaccuracies in word choice, spelling, and collocation. For example, 'life activites' contains a spelling error, 'unncessary' is misspelled, and 'make self choices' is an unnatural collocation compared to 'make their own choices'. Furthermore, the phrase 'the believe that' contains a grammatical form error for the noun 'belief'. Despite these slips, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the intended meaning without impeding communication, aligning with Band 6.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The writer employs a mix of simple and complex sentence forms throughout the response, successfully constructing multi-clause sentences such as 'The society in which we are currently living is getting more advanced...'. However, there are several grammatical errors and awkward phrasings present, such as 'This also results as children now-a-days are getting more stubborn' instead of 'resulting in children becoming', and 'a child must be allowed to make his or own choices' instead of 'his or her own choices'. Punctuation and article usage also show occasional lapses. Because the mixture of structures contains frequent minor errors that occasionally require the reader to re-read, the response fits the Band 6 category.
