IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people believe that allowing children to make their own choices on everyday matters (such as food, clothes and entertainment) is likely to result in a society of individuals who only think about their own wishes. Other people believe that it is important for children to make decisions about matters that affect them.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

There is an ongoing debate regarding the freedom that should be given to children in term of their everyday matters. A group of people believe that allowing children to make their own choice in everyday matter like food, entertainment fosters a culture of selfishness. However, others argue that it is important for their personal growth. Therefore, ahead of my opinion opinion both views will be discussed further.

Examining the former opinion, critics of excessive childhood autonomy argue that it foster selfishness and an inability to compromise. When children constantly make decisions and their parents does not bother what kind of decision their child is making, so their children begin to believe that their desire should always be completed by their parents. For instance, if a child is allowed to change the dinner's menu or television schedule every night, they might grow up expecting that the wirld will change according to their desire.

On the other hand, those in favour of the latter opinion have their own arguments. To begin with, they believe that is important for children to make their decisions as it is important for their personal growth. Parents should involve them in everyday decisions like deciding what to eat, planning for a trip with family and a decision to take part in extra curricula. This will foster a friendly environment and help children to develope new skills like decision making and increase mental abilities.

In conclusion, while completely unchecked freedom can lead to entitlement, I believe that offering guided choices is essential for building a child's independence and critical thinking skills.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views on childhood autonomy and providing a clear personal opinion in the introduction and conclusion. Ideas are relevant, such as the discussion on parental boundaries and the development of decision-making skills. However, some ideas are slightly under-developed; for instance, the assertion that children might expect the 'wirld will change' is not fully extended with deep elaboration. Nonetheless, the position is clear throughout, and the main tenets of the prompt are successfully fulfilled, fitting comfortably within the Band 6.5 to 7.0 criteria.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organised into an introduction, two body paragraphs representing opposing views, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas. Cohesive devices are employed to guide the reader, such as 'Examining the former opinion' and 'On the other hand'. However, referencing and transitions are occasionally mechanical, and phrases like 'ahead of my opinion opinion both views will be discussed further' reveal awkward phrasing and a slight lack of smooth progression. Overall arrangement is coherent, earning a solid Band 6.0.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'childhood autonomy', 'excessive', and 'entitlement'. However, there are noticeable word choice and spelling errors throughout the text, including 'in term of' instead of 'in terms of', 'develope' instead of 'develop', and 'wirld' instead of 'world'. While these errors do not impede overall communication, they restrict the lexical score to a Band 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The writing demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including conditional structures like 'if a child is allowed to change...'. However, grammatical accuracy is inconsistent. There are several noticeable errors, such as 'their parents does not bother' (subject-verb agreement), 'extra curricula' (incomplete noun phrase), and awkward phrasing like 'a decision to take part in extra curricula'. Punctuation and phrasing in the introductory paragraph ('ahead of my opinion opinion') also show lapses in control. These errors mean the text sits firmly at Band 6.0.
