Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The student addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views on children making everyday decisions and providing a personal opinion in the introduction and conclusion. However, the development of ideas is limited and at times repetitive. The reasoning regarding the psychological impact of decision-making tends to over-generalize and lacks fully articulated supporting arguments. For instance, the use of statistics attributed to surveys is vague and does not effectively bolster the central arguments. While a position is stated, the execution remains basic, aligning closely with the Band 5 descriptor where ideas are somewhat under-developed and the task is only partially explored in terms of depth and analytical rigor.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The response is arranged into four clear paragraphs, following a standard essay structure with an introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. However, the logical progression is frequently disrupted by awkward phrasing and mechanical transitions such as 'On the one hand' and 'On the other hand,' which are used repetitively. Referencing is sometimes unclear, particularly in the concluding paragraph where the sentence structure 'Until, few people and I believe...' creates confusion rather than cohesion. Paragraphing is present, but overall the flow suffers from inadequate and sometimes inaccurate cohesive devices, placing the response firmly at Band 5.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is generally basic and repetitive, with frequent word choice and collocation errors, such as 'giving permission to children about make choice' and 'wear and for entertainment.' The student attempts some less common vocabulary like 'tastebud' and 'independent,' but these are often used inaccurately or unidiomatically. Spelling and word-formation errors—such as 'being' instead of 'bring' or 'bring about'—occur throughout the text. While the vocabulary is minimally adequate to convey the basic topic, the noticeable errors and limited range restrict the score to a Band 5.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The essay displays a very limited range of grammatical structures, relying heavily on simple sentences and flawed attempts at complex clauses. There are frequent grammatical errors that impede comprehension, such as 'children love to their favourite things like choosing favourite food provide joy' and 'due to don't doing their favorite things.' Punctuation and verb tense agreement are inconsistently controlled. Because attempts at complex sentence forms are frequently faulty and errors cause difficulty for the reader, this performance corresponds to a Band 4.5, rounded to a Band 5.
