Student answer (Band 6.0)

Nowadays, children are given more freedom to make their own choices in everyday matters such as food, clothes and entertainment. Some people believe that this can make children selfish, while others think that making their own decisions is important for their development. This essay will discuss both views and explain why I believe children should be given some freedom with proper guidance from their parents.

On the one hand, allowing children to make all their decisions may encourage them to think only about their own desires. If children always get what they want, they may become less willing to accept other people's opinions and needs. For example, if a child is always allowed to choose their favourite food, they may refuse to eat meals prepared for whole family. Similarly, children who are allowed to choose their entertainment may spend all of their time in games and films instead of studies. Therefore, giving children unltimate freedom and authority to do their own decisions ca have negative effects on their own behaviour and social development.

On the other hand, allowing children to make decisions about matters that effect them can helo them to become more independent and responsible, When children make their own choices, they can learn how to solve tough problems of life in a proper way and understand the consequences of their decisions. For instance, parents can allow their children to choose their clothes or favourite extracurricular activites according to their interest. This can increase their confidence and also they perform very well in activities.

In conclusion, Altough giving children complete freedom of decision making may have serious drawbacks that effect their thinking anf real life. However,

it plays a vital role in character building and able them to take age appropriate decisions, but parents should provide them appropriate guidance and boundaries.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the task directly. The introduction clearly acknowledges both views and states the writer's position. Body paragraph one discusses the perspective that freedom leads to selfishness, providing relevant examples such as food choices and entertainment habits. Body paragraph two explores the counter-view regarding independence and responsibility. The conclusion restates the writer's stance. Ideas are generally well-extended, though some supporting points could be further elaborated. The position is clear throughout, aligning well with the Band 7 descriptor.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay is logically organised with a clear progression from introduction to body paragraphs and conclusion. Each paragraph has a distinct focus, and cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', and 'For example' are used appropriately to guide the reader. However, paragraphing and sentence linking in the conclusion are flawed, as seen in the fragmented structure ('Altough giving children complete freedom... However, it plays a vital role...'). This mechanical and faulty punctuation at the end prevents the response from reaching a higher band.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate and generally appropriate range of vocabulary for the task. Less common lexical items are attempted, such as 'extracurricular activities', 'character building', and 'consequences'. However, there are a few spelling and word-choice errors, including 'unltimate' instead of 'ultimate', 'effect' instead of 'affect', 'helo' instead of 'help', and 'anf' instead of 'and'. Despite these slips, meaning is never impeded, which is characteristic of Band 6.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating control over relative clauses and conditional structures (e.g., 'If children always get what they want...'). There are frequent error-free sentences, but several grammatical errors persist, such as 'prepared for whole family' (missing article), 'do their own decisions' (collocation error for 'make'), and the severe structural error in the concluding sentence ('...and able them to take age appropriate decisions, but...'). These errors place the grammar firmly in the Band 6 category.
