Some people believe that allowing children to make their own choices on everyday matters (such as food, clothes and entertainment) is likely to result in a society of individuals who only think about their own wishes. Other people believe that it is important for children to make decisions about matters that affect them.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

once we got married and got kids , the responsibilities rose on the children , because it's important to know how to manage the children whole thing, some parents think that allowing their kids to make their choices on everyday matters it is important ,and some of them thinks it is important to make their kids to take choices on matters that affect them.

to begin with , children need the free on choosing what they want to wear or to eat ,or the hobby they want to practice cause these things is simple and easy ones that will make them to think and realise that they have opinion in this life to express it and make people listen to it for example to choose their clothes and what they want to eat .

on the other hand ,another thing that i think kids are not alowed to act on the matters that affect them in their future , cause they are kids and they don't know what to do since they got not information about it , and no expriences , so they will not know how to act and think on these ones so the best thing to do is explaining to their kids the importance of these matters and take the lead .

to conclude, parents need to seperate between the things that are silly and normal and the significant ones , and the children need to listen to their parents in everything they tell them to do.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response attempts to address all parts of the task by discussing both views on allowing children to make choices and providing an opinion in the conclusion, stating that parents should separate silly matters from significant ones. However, the development of ideas is limited and at times confusing, particularly in the introduction and body paragraphs where the student struggles to clearly articulate the two opposing perspectives. The position is somewhat blurred by imprecise phrasing and underdeveloped supporting details, such as the vague examples provided in the body paragraphs. While the main prompt requirements are acknowledged, the overall depth corresponds to a Band 5 level due to the lack of clear, fully elaborated arguments.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The essay is divided into paragraphs, but the logical progression and overall coherence are heavily disrupted by run-on sentences and punctuation errors, such as missing capital letters and improper spacing around commas. Cohesive devices are minimal or repetitive; for instance, the writer relies on simple transitional phrases like "to begin with" and "on the other hand," but these are not always followed by logically sound connections. Referencing is occasionally unclear, making it hard to follow which group or idea the pronouns refer to. Paragraphing is attempted, but the internal cohesion within paragraphs is faulty, placing the response firmly at Band 5.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is basic, repetitive, and restricted to simple everyday terms such as "things," "kids," and "matters." There are noticeable word choice and collocation errors throughout the response, such as "got kids," "responsibilities rose on the children," "the free on choosing," and "got not information about it." While the writer attempts to use less common vocabulary like "significant," these attempts are overshadowed by frequent inaccuracies and awkward phrasing that occasionally strain the reader's understanding. This performance reflects the descriptors for Band 5.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The grammatical range is extremely limited, consisting mostly of lengthy, poorly structured run-on sentences joined by commas instead of correct conjunctions or full stops. There are frequent, systematic errors in tense, subject-verb agreement, and articles (e.g., "cause these things is simple," "didn't know what to do since they got not information"). Complex structures are rarely attempted accurately, and basic punctuation rules are consistently ignored. Because these frequent errors cause difficulty for the reader and obscure meaning in places, the grammar aligns with Band 4.5, rounded to Band 5.
