IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people believe that allowing children to make their own choices on everyday matters (such as food, clothes and entertainment) is likely to result in a society of individuals who only think about their own wishes. Other people believe that it is important for children to make decisions about matters that affect them.
Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
It is a common belief of some individuals that, giving a freedom to children in making decisions on daily basis for selecting food and clothes or finding an entertainment method ends with a society who has selfish people. On the hand, other group of individuals consider that children should decide only those matters that are affecting their lives. In this essay, i will discuss both views before reaching an opinion.
There are many parents in our society that perfer the choice and happiness of their offsprings without considering its good or bad results. They ask for child's preference in everyday routine such as, they will ask for selection of a dish from a menu card, buying his favorite clothes from a store, and watching a movie in a cinema. As a result, when these little babies grown up and become adult, they show a selfish behaviour, becuase they are habitual of getting positive response for their own likings. So, they always prefer their personal liking without considering the others.
In contrast, there is another belief of pepople that children should only be involved in those decisions, which can have effects in their life. Hence, many individuals having children, show a restricted behaviour. They only allow their children choices when a decision may have good or better outcomes in the lives of their child and are very crucial part of their lives. For example, these guardians ask for opinion of a child when its time for selecting a professional field and considering a girl or a boy for marriage.
In conclusion, I concur that guarding individuals should restrict their young ones in some daily based decisions but they should allow them in choosing a factor which may have significant impact on their lives. This strategy will produce a community of individuals who have some flexibility to cooperate with others lagging behind their selfishness.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views—that allowing children daily choices fosters selfishness versus the view that decision-making on relevant matters is important—and provides a clear personal opinion in the introduction and conclusion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat uneven. For instance, the first body paragraph argues that letting children choose food, clothes, or entertainment leads to selfish adults, but this link is asserted rather than fully extended with robust reasoning or concrete examples. Similarly, the second body paragraph introduces relevant points about restricting choices to significant life decisions, such as marriage or career, but the argument remains slightly limited. To reach a higher level, the ideas would need more thorough expansion and deeper exploration.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression from introduction to body paragraphs and a concluding stance. Paragraphing is used sufficiently, with each main body paragraph dedicated to a distinct viewpoint. Cohesive devices are employed to connect ideas, such as "In contrast" and "In conclusion," but referencing and cohesion are occasionally mechanical or slightly faulty, as seen in phrases like "On the hand" or transitions that lack seamless flow. Pronoun referencing is generally adequate, though occasional ambiguity slightly affects the tightness of the logical progression. To improve further, the writer should integrate cohesive devices more naturally and ensure smoother transitions between sentences and paragraphs.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, demonstrating an attempt to use less common items and topic-related terminology, such as "offsprings," "professional field," and "cooperate." However, there are noticeable lexical errors in word choice, word form, and spelling throughout the text. Examples include "giving a freedom" instead of freedom, "perfer" for prefer, "grown up" instead of grow up, "becuase" for because, and "pepople" for people. Additionally, collocation is sometimes awkward, such as "daily based decisions" instead of daily decisions. These errors do not impede overall communication, but they reflect a limited precision that prevents the lexical score from advancing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The writer demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting structures such as conditional and relative clauses, as seen in "children should only be involved in those decisions, which can have effects in their life." There are, however, some errors in grammar and punctuation, including missing or incorrect articles ("giving a freedom", "in our society"), pluralisation issues ("everyday routine"), and prepositional usage ("on daily basis"). Despite these errors in grammar and punctuation, they rarely impede communication, and the meaning generally remains clear. To achieve a higher level, the writer would need to demonstrate greater control over complex sentence patterns and significantly reduce the frequency of basic grammatical slips.
