IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people believe that allowing children to make their own choices on everyday matters (such as food, clothes and entertainment) is likely to result in a society of individuals who only think about their own wishes. Other people believe that it is important for children to make decisions about matters that affect them.
Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Some individuals have the opinion that making one's own decisions on daily basis can lead the children to becoming self-centered, while others believe that it is essential for them to decide about the matters concerning them. Even though, decision making from an early age might make the individual only think about themselves, I personally believe that it aid in creating a sense of responsibility.
Children choosing their own food, clothes and entertainment might lead to a society of individuals who are self-absorbed. Growing up, they have been so independent in their choices that they do not like interferring in someone's else matters. Similarly, they expect others to respect their boundries. For instance, my niece liked to chose her own clothes as a child, which has lead to expensive fashion choices which can not be influenced by anyone. She never thinks about the financial strain she puts on her parents who are currently funding her expenses.
On the other hand, some individuals view that it is important for children to make decisions for one's own matters. I agree with this sentiment as well because it helps in fostering responsibility among them. They tend to learn from their mistakes, for instance, a hostellite understands that wrong food choices may lead to health problems, so they may start eating healthier. They understand that each action has a consequence and therefore they make resposible choices growing up. Additionally, children who decide for themselves have sharper critical thinking skills as they are using their brains actively for making choices. They can face any challenge thrown in their way. These skills benefit an individual which is why children should make their own choices.
To sum it up, children making their own choices can lead to them only caring about themselves after they grow up. However, I believe that children should be given independence in their choice to help them become responsible and tackle life problems efficiently.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You address both views and state a clear position: although children’s choices may encourage self-centredness, you believe they help develop responsibility. The examples about your niece’s clothing choices and a student learning from food choices make the discussion relevant. This meets the task well, but the two sides are not developed equally: the first example focuses on expensive clothes and parental finances, rather than showing more broadly how everyday choice could reduce consideration for others. The benefits of decision-making are also asserted in places—for example, that children can “face any challenge”—without explaining how this follows. To strengthen the response, develop each claim with a clearer explanation and keep your opinion consistently qualified, such as distinguishing age-appropriate choices from unrestricted independence.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, and a conclusion that restates your position. The contrast between “On the other hand” and “To sum it up” helps readers follow the argument, and examples are placed alongside the relevant points. However, some connections are mechanical or unclear. “Even though” introduces a concession but is followed by a comma that interrupts the sentence, while “I agree with this sentiment as well” can make your position seem less precise after you have already stated your own view. The niece example also moves quickly from choosing clothes to financial strain. Use more explicit links to explain how each example supports the paragraph’s main claim, and make references such as “they” unambiguous.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including “self-centered,” “fostering responsibility,” “financial strain,” and “critical thinking skills.” These choices help express both the risks and benefits of children making decisions. There are also attempts at more specific language, but some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, such as “interferring in someone’s else matters,” “hostellite,” and “make responsible choices growing up.” Spelling errors including “boundries,” “resposible,” and “chose” also reduce accuracy. These issues do not prevent understanding, but they limit precision and naturalness. Build control by checking spelling and learning common collocations—for example, “make decisions about their own affairs” and “learn from the consequences of their choices.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including a concession in the introduction and a conditional example: “wrong food choices may lead to health problems.” Most ideas remain understandable, and you attempt to connect clauses to explain cause and effect. Some grammatical errors persist, however. In “it aid in creating,” the verb should agree with “it”; “has lead” uses the wrong participle; and “a hostellite understands … so they may start” shifts from singular to plural reference. The opening phrase “Even though, decision making…” also has faulty punctuation, and “matters concerning them” is not consistently matched with the later “one’s own matters.” Review subject–verb agreement, verb forms, pronoun consistency, and punctuation around introductory clauses to make your varied structures more controlled.
