Other people believe that it is important for children to make decisions about matters that affect them.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Many people argue that allowing children in everyday decision making such as clothing, food choices etc is likely to make them self-centered individuals in society while others think that it is crucial for children to make decisions on matters that may affect their lives. Despite some negative effects, I personally believe that children should be given autononmy in certain aspects of lives particularly decision related to their careers which is a path to success for many individuals.

On one hand, those who contend that chidrens who make decisions may result in individuals who are insensitive to others. These children might become less empathatic and inconsiderate to others. It is often believed that such behaviour ultimately cause the negative culture in society such as competition rather than cooperation. For instance, When children are in competiton they disregard the unity and differences which leads to disparity in society.

On the other hand, critics agrue that when children learn to make decision from early age, they are likely to make critical decision with much ease later in life. In other words, those who have the ability to take decisions are considered more confident individuals than those who are indecisive. It becomes more prudent when people have to make decisions particularly in their professional lives. For instance, individuals in manegerial positions are required to make quick decisions. In such cases, the ability to think and act fast makes people smart and ultimately sucessful. In my view, individuals should be given the authority to make life choices especially related to personal and professional lives. If individuals are encouraged to make choices from the young age they will likely to make wise decision for themselves in future.

In conclusion, decision making not only play an important role in certain aspects of life but it is even more important for people personal and professional growth.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both views and state a clear position: children should have autonomy, particularly over choices connected with their future. The two body paragraphs are relevant, and the examples about cooperation and managerial decision-making help illustrate your points. However, the first view is less fully explained: the link between children choosing everyday things and becoming self-centred is asserted, while the competition example does not clearly show how ordinary choices lead to disregard for others. Your own opinion also shifts towards career and professional decisions, although the prompt focuses on everyday matters affecting children. Develop this connection more directly and explain how children can make choices while learning to consider other people’s needs.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure, with an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, and a conclusion. Signposting such as “On one hand,” “On the other hand,” and “In conclusion” makes the progression easy to follow. Some links between ideas are less clear or feel mechanical. For example, “For instance, When children are in competition…” does not clearly connect everyday decision-making to the claimed social consequences, and “In other words” introduces a related point rather than a precise restatement. The conclusion repeats the general importance of decision-making but does not bring the two views together. Use clearer cause-and-effect links and refer back to the specific arguments when concluding.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including “self-centered,” “inconsiderate,” “cooperation,” “indecisive,” and “managerial positions.” These choices communicate the main ideas, and you attempt some less common terms. However, several spelling and word-choice errors reduce precision, including “autononmy,” “empathatic,” “competiton,” and “sucessful.” Some expressions are also awkward or imprecise: “make critical decision” and “the negative culture in society” do not convey the intended meaning naturally. Aim for accurate collocations and check spelling carefully. More precise wording would also help distinguish everyday choices from major life decisions.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex forms, including a concession in “Despite some negative effects” and conditional structures such as “If individuals are encouraged to make choices…”. The overall meaning is generally clear, but some grammatical errors remain. For example, “such behaviour ultimately cause” has a subject–verb agreement error, while “they will likely to make” uses an incorrect verb pattern. There are also problems with articles and plurals in “from early age” and “make critical decision,” and the opening sentence is difficult to control because of its long, crowded structure. Practise checking agreement, verb patterns, and singular/plural forms, and divide long sentences where needed.
