Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In general people suggest that permitting young people to take their own decisions on daily matters such as food, clothes and entertainment is likely to encourage the society of individuals who only think aout their own choices. Few people believe that it is important for the youth to opt for the choices about stuff that affect them.

In my opinion, children must be allowed to take decisions under the guidance of their parents.

On the one hand, giving children too much freedom can encourage selfish behaviour. I f children always get they want, they can become unwilling to consider the choices and feelings of others. For instance, allowing children to choose only their favourite food or clothing can prevent them from compromising with their family members. Moreover, they might develop unrealistic expectations and find it difficult to accept rules and restrictions in the future. Therefore, parents should teach them the significance of discipline, respect and responsibility.

On the other hand, allowing children to make decisions has several advantages. Firstly, it can help them become independent and confident. When chilredn choose their clothes, food or hobbies, they learn to express their preferences and understnd their own interests. Secondly, making decisions help them develop problem-solving skills and learn from their mistakes. For example, if a child spens too much money on toys, they may understand the importance od saving. These experiences can prepare them to make sensible decisions as adults.

In my opinion, I firmly believe children should be encouraged to make decisions about everyday matters, but parents must set reasonable boundaries. This approach allows children to respect others and understand the consequences of their actions.

In the concluding statement, it is concluded that although accessive freedom mau encourage selfishness, giving children appropriate choices is essential for their personal development. A balance between freedom and parental guidance is the best way to raise responsible individuals.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address both views and give a clear position: children should make everyday decisions with parental guidance. The two body paragraphs present relevant reasons, including the risk of selfishness and the benefits of independence and problem-solving. Examples such as choosing food and spending too much on toys help illustrate these points. This meets the task well, while the overall development is not yet consistently thorough: the first view is supported mainly by general consequences, and the examples could be explained more fully to show how they affect children’s relationships or later behaviour. Your conclusion restates the balanced position effectively. To strengthen the response further, develop each main reason with a more specific explanation or example and make the comparison between the two views more explicit.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, your opinion, and a conclusion. Signposting such as “On the one hand,” “On the other hand,” and “In my opinion” makes the direction easy to follow. However, some cohesion is mechanical because several points are introduced through formulaic transitions such as “Firstly” and “Secondly,” and the final paragraph repeats the opinion already stated immediately before it. There are also small flow problems where punctuation runs ideas together, as in “in the future. Therefore,” and the opening contrast between the views is not expressed very smoothly. Use transitions more selectively, connect explanations directly to their examples, and avoid repeating the same conclusion in two consecutive paragraphs.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including “selfish behaviour,” “unrealistic expectations,” “problem-solving skills,” and “reasonable boundaries.” These phrases communicate the main ideas clearly, and some choices show an attempt to be precise. However, noticeable spelling and word-choice errors reduce accuracy, including “aout,” “chilredn,” “understnd,” “spens,” “od,” “accessive,” and “mau.” Some collocations are also awkward: “take their own decisions,” “compromising with their family members,” and “access to choices” do not sound natural in context. Proofread carefully and learn common word partnerships, such as “make decisions,” “compromise with family members,” and “excessive freedom.” This would make your vocabulary more controlled and natural.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including conditional structures such as “If children always get what they want, they can become unwilling…” and a subordinate clause beginning “although.” Most ideas remain understandable, and the response shows some control of sentence construction. Some grammatical errors persist, however. For example, “making decisions help them” has a subject–verb agreement error, while “if a child spends too much money…, they may understand” shifts from singular to plural reference. The sentence “I f children always get they want” also has errors in spacing and clause structure, and “In the concluding statement, it is concluded” is an awkward passive construction. Check agreement, pronoun consistency, and sentence boundaries, and aim to make complex sentences accurate as well as varied.
