IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people believe that allowing children to make their own choices on everyday matters (such as food, clothes and entertainment) is likely to result in a society of individuals who only think about their own wishes. Other people believe that it is important for children to make decisions about matters that affect them.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

It is argued by some people that allowing children to make their own choices on everyday matters is likely to result in a society of individuals who only think about their own wishes. They are right because if we allow children to make their decisions by themselves about their wishes in every matter, they become rude and they only think about their wishes. They do not care about anyone need. They have no need of anyone and they become alone. And in this way a society came into being in which those individuals exist only who mind their own businesses. They don't care of anyone.

However, some peole claimed that it is important for children to make decisions about maters that effect them. They are also right because allowing children to make their decisions by themselves make them independent. As they are independent of nobody so they can make their decisions and make progress in their lives and become successful in their lives. They can achieve what they desire because they don't depend on anyone.

In my opinion,it is good to allow children to make their decisions by themselves but not in every matter.Because in some they can make decesions and in some matters children are not able to make decesions. As they ae children so they don't have experience about life so they can't make deal with every situation of life. They need help of their elders. So,parents should give advice to their chilldren where they need advice and teach them where they are on wrong way. So,children are allowed to make their decesions as it makes them independent but not in every matter because sometime they are on wrong way.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You discuss both views and give a clear personal position: children should make choices, but not in every matter. The response also gives relevant reasons, such as independence and children’s limited life experience. However, these ideas are mostly asserted rather than explained or supported with specific examples, and the discussion repeats the point that children may focus only on their own wishes. The response is 232 words, so it is 18 words below the 250-word minimum; 37 words copied from the task prompt were not counted. This shortfall contributes to the limited development. To strengthen the response, explain how parents can balance choice with guidance and add a concrete example for each view.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure: one paragraph presents the concern about self-centredness, another explains the value of children making decisions, and a final paragraph gives your opinion. This makes the main line of discussion understandable. However, progression within paragraphs is limited, and several ideas are repeated, particularly that children think only about their wishes or become independent. Linking words such as “However,” “because,” and “So” help connect points, but they are sometimes used mechanically, and the final paragraph begins with a sentence fragment after “In my opinion.” Use clearer topic sentences, combine repeated points, and make each paragraph develop one main idea through explanation or an example.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.5

You use enough basic vocabulary to communicate the central ideas, including “independent,” “successful,” “experience,” and “advice.” However, the range is limited and several words or phrases are repeated, especially “make their decisions,” “wishes,” and “in every matter.” Some choices are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “They do not care about anyone need,” “They have no need of anyone,” and “on wrong way.” Spelling errors, including “peole,” “maters,” “effect,” and “decesions,” also reduce accuracy. These issues sometimes make the reader pause, although the overall meaning remains understandable. Build a wider set of precise phrases for discussing responsibility, guidance, and personal development, and proofread spelling and collocations.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

You attempt some longer sentences using “because,” “as,” and “so,” and the reader can generally follow your argument. However, the range is limited, and complex sentences are often faulty. For example, “allowing children to make their decisions by themselves make them independent” has a subject–verb agreement error, while “They do not care about anyone need” lacks a grammatical possessive form. There are also sentence-boundary and punctuation problems, including the fragment “Because in some they can make decesions” and missing spaces after full stops. Practise forming complete sentences with accurate agreement, articles, and clause connections. Shorter, correctly punctuated sentences will help make your reasoning clearer before you attempt more complex structures.
