Some people believe that allowing children to make their own choices on everyday matters (such as food, clothes and entertainment) is likely to result in a society of individuals who only think about their own wishes. Other people believe that it is important for children to make decisions about matters that affect them.
Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
In recent years, kid`s independence has become a subject of considerable debate. While some people argue that letting them choose their own decision will make them selfish, others contend that it is crucial for their goodness. This essay will discuss both perspectives before explaining why I believe that why letting children decide their own decision is important for their mental devolopment.
On the one hand, there are several reasons why indivisuals believe that children should not make their own decision. The primary argument is that if children start making their own choice while they are very young it will lead them to selfishness. This is largely because human don`t know the moral value of humanity until they reach a certain age. For instance, a recent study in Zurich University of Applied Sciences has shown that children who become independent at a very little age think more about themselves than about others. They think what would be better for them and what they like without caring about other`s feelings. Another reason is that when children make wrong decision it will frustrate them very soon.Consequently, they become more selfish when they grow up and do not think or take care of their parents properly.
On the other hand, others contend that parents should let their children to make their own decision. One significant reason is that indivisuals think if humans start making their own choice while they are young , it will eventually lead them to build a better personality and it will help them to be more successfull in life. This can be contributed to their ability of better decision making in the future. Another scientific research at Oxford University has shown that children who become independent at a young age are better at decision making while they are adult. They don`t have to suffer to make a choice and they usually do not make wrong decisions as they are trained properly. For Example, In India who become independent early are more likely to take care of their parents when they grow up.
In Conclusion, although letting children not make their own decision until they reach an age has certain merits, let them choose their own decision is more convincing in my view because it will help them to learn many things and make their personality better

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You address both views and state a clear preference for children making choices, linking this to mental development and future decision-making. The two main body paragraphs are relevant, and the examples about children considering others and learning to make choices help illustrate the arguments. However, some points are asserted rather than fully explained: for example, the claim that early independence makes children selfish, and the link between frustration over a wrong choice and later neglect of parents, need clearer reasoning. The supporting research references are also broad and not explored in detail. Develop each key idea with a more specific explanation or example, and make your own position more explicit throughout the discussion, not only in the introduction and conclusion.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a coherent overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the opposing views, and a conclusion. Signposting such as “On the one hand,” “On the other hand,” and “In Conclusion” makes the organisation easy to follow. Within paragraphs, however, connections can be mechanical, and some references are unclear. For instance, “This can be contributed to their ability of better decision making” does not clearly identify which preceding idea “This” refers to, while several sentences repeat the idea of children making their own choices. Improve progression by linking each reason directly to its consequence and varying transitions. Clearer paragraph-level development and more precise referencing would make the argument flow more naturally.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use a relevant range of vocabulary for the topic, including “considerable debate,” “moral value,” “independent,” and “decision making.” These choices help communicate the main ideas, but inaccurate word forms, spelling, and collocations reduce precision. Examples include “devolopment,” “indivisuals,” and “successfull,” as well as “for their goodness” and “make their own decision,” which are not natural expressions in this context. The repeated use of “decision,” “choice,” and “children” also limits flexibility. Build accuracy by checking spelling and learning common word partnerships, such as “make their own decisions” and “develop a sense of responsibility.” A wider set of precise terms would help express the contrast between autonomy and self-centredness.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and complex structures, including conditional clauses (“if children start making their own choice…”) and contrast clauses (“although…”). Most of the argument remains understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “letting their children to make” uses an unnecessary infinitive marker, and “when they are adult” has an incorrect noun form. There are also agreement and article issues in phrases such as “human don`t know” and “make a choice,” alongside punctuation problems where sentences run directly into the next one after “debate.” Use a careful proofreading pass for verb patterns, singular/plural forms, articles, and sentence boundaries. More consistently accurate complex sentences would strengthen control.
