IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people believe that allowing children to make their own choices on everyday matters (such as food, clothes and entertainment) is likely to result in a society of individuals who only think about their own wishes. Other people believe that it is important for children to make decisions about matters that affect them.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address both views and give a clear position: unrestricted choice may encourage self-centred behaviour, while guided freedom supports development. The examples about food and screen time explain the concern about empathy, and the cold-weather clothing example illustrates learning from consequences. This covers the task well. To make the discussion more fully developed, explain more precisely how everyday choices teach children to consider other people, and extend the first view beyond a list of possible outcomes. Your conclusion’s proposal of “curated option[s]” usefully reconciles the views, but could be linked more explicitly to the examples and principles discussed. The response already shows a clear, relevant argument; fuller explanation and support for some points would strengthen it further.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, one paragraph for each view, and a conclusion stating your position. The contrast between “on the other hand” and “on the other hand” signals the two perspectives, and examples generally follow the claims they support. However, the repeated transition is confusing because the second paragraph also begins with “on the other hand”; use “on the one hand” for the first view. Some links are mechanical, and the long opening sentence in the first body paragraph makes the relationship between the example and its consequence harder to follow. Improve progression by using clearer topic sentences and linking each example directly to the point it illustrates. Paragraphing is appropriate, but referencing and transitions need more consistent control.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You attempt a relevant range of vocabulary, including “autonomy,” “self-absorption,” “compromise,” “empathy,” and “consequences,” which helps express the topic’s key ideas. However, spelling and word-choice errors are noticeable and sometimes make the reader pause, as in “daily choses,” “sel centered,” “nutrious,” and “boundries.” Some combinations are also unnatural, such as “collaborate to others” and “structure freedom.” These inaccuracies limit the precision and flexibility of the vocabulary, despite the useful range of ideas you are trying to express. Proofread carefully and learn common word partnerships alongside individual words; accurate use of a smaller set of precise terms will make your argument clearer and more convincing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex structures, including a concession in “while unrestricted freedom can lead to spoiled behaviour” and conditional reasoning about children learning from choices. The main ideas remain understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “when young individuals allow to prioritize” needs a passive form (“are allowed to prioritize”), while “if child choose” needs an article and subject–verb agreement (“if a child chooses”). The sentence beginning “selecting their own clothing” also lacks a clear grammatical connection to its main clause, and several sentences need more controlled punctuation. Practise building accurate complex sentences, especially with subordinate clauses, articles, and verb forms, then check each sentence for a complete subject and verb.
