IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people believe that allowing children to make their own choices on everyday matters (such as food, clothes and entertainment) is likely to result in a society of individuals who only think about their own wishes. Other people believe that it is important for children to make decisions about matters that affect them.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Children make many choices in their daily lives, such as what to eat, what to wear, and how to spend their free time. Some people believe that children should be allowed to make these choices, while others think they should only decide about matters that shape them. From my own perspective, children should have some freedom, but parents should guide them when necessary.

On the one hand, letting children to make their own choices can teach them to become independent. When children decide what to wear or which activities to enjoy, they learn to understand their own likes and dislikes. As a result, they may become more confident and responsible. For example, if a child is allowed to choose their clothes, they can learn to express their personal style. Therefor, making small decions can prepare children for adult life.

On the other hand, some people think that children should not be allowed to make every decisions by themselves. This is because they do not always have enough knowledge or experience to understand the results of their choices. For instance, a child may want to eat sweets every day, but this could affect their health. Family should explain why healthy food is cruical and guide their kids towards better outcome. In this way, children can learn to make sensible decions without losing their freedom.

In conclusion, allowing children to make their own choices can develop their confidence and independence, but they still need guidance from adults. I believe that parents should give children freedom in everyday matters while helping them make wise decisions about their lives.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both views and give a clear position: children benefit from freedom, but parents should guide them. The examples about choosing clothes and eating sweets are relevant and help explain independence and health. This fits the criterion because the main parts of the question are covered, but some ideas are developed more fully than others. The benefits of choice are explained through confidence and responsibility, while the opposing view is mainly illustrated by one food example. The task also asks about the risk of children becoming self-centred; this concern is only indirectly addressed. To strengthen the response, explain more explicitly how unrestricted choices might encourage self-interest, then compare that risk with the value of age-appropriate decision-making.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, and a conclusion that restates your position. Signposting such as “On the one hand,” “On the other hand,” and “In conclusion” makes the progression easy to follow. The examples are generally placed where they support the relevant point, and the conclusion follows logically from the discussion. To make the organisation more flexible and cohesive, connect ideas within paragraphs more precisely rather than relying mainly on standard transitions. For example, explain how learning personal preferences leads to responsibility, and make the link between parental guidance and avoiding self-centred behaviour explicit. A few awkward sentence connections and spacing inconsistencies also interrupt the otherwise clear flow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including “independent,” “confident,” “responsible,” “personal style,” and “sensible decisions.” These choices communicate the main ideas clearly, and phrases such as “adult life” and “healthy food” are appropriate. However, the range is somewhat repetitive, with frequent use of “choices,” “decisions,” and “children,” and some word forms or collocations are inaccurate. Examples include “make every decisions,” “better outcome,” and the misspellings “Therefor,” “decions,” and “cruical.” These errors do not prevent understanding, but they reduce precision. Build a wider set of expressions for autonomy, parental guidance, and consequences, and check spelling and singular/plural forms carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including conditional and subordinate clauses: “if a child is allowed to choose their clothes” and “because they do not always have enough knowledge or experience.” Most sentences are understandable, and the errors rarely obscure your meaning. Some grammatical inaccuracies remain, however. For example, “letting children to make” should be “letting children make,” and “make every decisions” needs a plural noun after “every” or a different determiner. In “Family should explain,” the article or plural form is missing, while “guide their kids towards better outcome” also needs a suitable article or plural. Continue practising verb patterns, agreement, and articles, while varying sentence structures beyond the repeated use of “when,” “if,” and “because.”
