IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people believe that allowing children to make their own choices on everyday matters (such as food, clothes and entertainment) is likely to result in a society of individuals who only think about their own wishes. Other people believe that it is important for children to make decisions about matters that affect them.
Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
In the contemporary society, whether permitting children to take decisions about their daily life matters by themselves gives birth to the self-centered individuals in a society or it is an effective approach is a subject of intense debate. In my opinion, while there are valid arguments on both sides, I firmly believe that although children should be asked about their choices, they should not be allowed to decide independently about their food, clothing, entertainment and other everyday options.
On the one hand, proponents of supporting liberty for child-aged boys and girls in choosing their routine basic necessities by themselves argue that it directly provides democratic benefits. Additionally, it also develops a sense of responsibility, accountability and confidence in the young population. For instance, in the highly developed countries such as the USA and the UK, there are particularly laws and policies for adults of not imposing their decisions on their offsprings.
On the other hand, I maintain that bounding your offsprings to opt for their daily matters on their ownselves yields far greater long-term social and moral benefits. This is primarily because at this age bracket, they are not able to understand which is good and beneficial for them and which can be harmful particularly in clothing and entertainment context. A prime example of this can be seen in the orphans' behaviour who has not brought up under normal circumstances that they possess a toxic attitude of not obeying anyone and doing whatever they want to do.
To conclude my discussion, although considering the children's choices while making decisions is an essential approach that must be implemented, I reiterate that they must not be allowed to decide everything independently without any intervention of their guardians.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You address both views and state a clear position: children should be consulted but should not decide independently. The discussion of responsibility, accountability and confidence gives a relevant reason for allowing choice, while your second body paragraph explains that children may not recognise harmful options. However, the two sides are not developed equally: the first view is supported mainly by a broad claim about democratic benefits and a reference to laws in the USA and UK, without explaining how these examples demonstrate the benefits. The orphan example is also a weak fit for everyday decision-making and risks overgeneralising from a particular group. Develop each argument with a more direct explanation or a specific, relevant example to make the response more fully supported.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The essay has a clear overall structure: an introduction presents your position, two body paragraphs discuss contrasting views, and the conclusion restates your stance. Signposting such as “On the one hand,” “On the other hand,” and “To conclude” makes the progression easy to follow. Ideas within the paragraphs generally move from a claim to an explanation or example. To strengthen the organisation further, make the relationship between examples and claims more explicit: the reference to laws in the USA and UK does not clearly illustrate the benefits you have just named, and the orphan example needs a clearer link to children’s everyday choices. More precise transitions between these points would make cohesion feel less formulaic while preserving the clear structure.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
You use a reasonably broad range of vocabulary, including “self-centered,” “accountability,” “long-term social and moral benefits,” and “intervention,” which helps express the topic and your position. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “subject of intense debate.” However, several choices are inaccurate or unnatural, including “gives birth to the self-centered individuals,” “child-aged boys and girls,” “bounding your offsprings,” and “on their ownselves.” These do not prevent the reader from understanding your main points, but they reduce precision and naturalness. Aim for common, accurate collocations rather than elaborate phrasing, and check word forms and spelling, as in “offsprings.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including a concession in the introduction (“while there are valid arguments on both sides”) and a reason clause beginning “This is primarily because.” Most sentences communicate the intended meaning, and the overall argument remains understandable. Some grammatical errors persist, however. For example, “the orphans’ behaviour who has not brought up” has faulty agreement and an incomplete passive construction; “they possess” also has an unclear reference. In “although considering the children’s choices … is an essential approach,” the clause structure is awkward. Review subject–verb agreement, passive forms, and the construction of subordinate clauses, then proofread long sentences to ensure each pronoun has a clear antecedent.
