IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people believe that allowing children to make their own choices on everyday matters (such as food, clothes and entertainment) is likely to result in a society of individuals who only think about their own wishes. Other people believe that it is important for children to make decisions about matters that affect them.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

people have different views about that children should make their decision by themself, While others believe that it will affect their future and they only think about their own decision. I completely agree that minors should make their ow decision.

There is a number of reasons why i believe that given the rights to childrens to make their own decision will be important for their life. One possible reason is that it helps them to more self depended. For example, when a child make their decision by own he always focus on his wishes. They never follow anyones decision, for this reason they can focus on their career goals in childhood. Another reason, they will be more responsible and they make leadership activities in their minds. I think it will be beneficial for their life and they will be succed in their career.

Despite the above arguments, there is some downsides of this that allowing minors to make their decision without anyone choices. Firstly, they dont have enough age to know what is good or bad for their lifes so they can be made a wrong decison that will be dangerous for their lifes, because they dont have enough experience their parents decision would be more effective for them. Secondly, they cannot respect others decison because of their self decision they think they are always right and everyone wrong. Furthermore, in future they dont care about others and they cannot make any friends.

In conclusion, I strongly agree it is significant for minors to make their decision. There are some disadvantages but i think it's advantages are more beneficial.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You give a clear opinion in the introduction and conclusion, and you include reasons on both sides: independence and responsibility are presented as benefits, while poor judgement and difficulty respecting others are presented as risks. However, the discussion is uneven and only partly developed. The opposing view is described, but the essay does not fully explain why some people believe everyday choices could encourage selfishness; the claim that children may “only think about their own decision” is not explored with a concrete example. Your supporting points, such as career focus and leadership, are also asserted rather than explained. To strengthen the response, address the exact concern in the prompt and develop each main idea with a clear explanation or relevant example.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, and a conclusion. Basic signposting such as “Another reason,” “Despite the above arguments,” and “In conclusion” helps readers follow the broad direction. However, progression within paragraphs is sometimes unclear: the link between making everyday choices and focusing on career goals is not explained, and several ideas are added without showing how they connect. The contrast paragraph also moves from poor decisions to respect and friendship without a clear sequence. Some linking phrases are mechanical, and references such as “this” in “downsides of this” are vague. Use clearer topic sentences and connect each example directly to the point it supports.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “responsible,” “career goals,” “beneficial,” and “experience,” so the main ideas are generally understandable. However, the range is limited and several words or phrases are repeated, especially “decision” and “life.” There are also noticeable errors in word choice, form, and spelling, such as “self depended,” “succed,” “decison,” and “anyones decision.” Some expressions are unnatural, including “make leadership activities in their minds” and “without anyone choices,” which make the intended meaning less clear. Build a more precise set of phrases for autonomy, judgement, and social responsibility, and check spelling and collocations when editing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and longer sentences, including clauses with “because” and “that,” and the overall meaning can usually be followed. However, the range is limited, and complex sentences are often faulty. Examples include “There is a number of reasons,” “when a child make their decision,” and “they can be made a wrong decision,” where agreement or sentence construction is inaccurate. Articles, plurals, and possessives are also inconsistent, as in “the rights to childrens” and “their lifes.” Capitalisation and punctuation errors, including lowercase “i” and the comma splice in the opening, further affect accuracy. Practise building accurate sentences with one main clause and a subordinate clause, then check agreement, articles, and sentence boundaries.
