IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people believe that allowing children to make their own choices on everyday matters (such as food, clothes and entertainment) is likely to result in a society of individuals who only think about their own wishes. Other people believe that it is important for children to make decisions about matters that affect them.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

Human is a social being. So, a human should grow up with the morals for social wellbeing. Some says that allowing childrens to make their own decision is likely to result in a society of individuals and others argues that it's important for children to make their own decision about matters that affect them. Both argument is right in different states.

When a child can make their own choices they grow up with confidence. They know what they want and they can gain practical experience from their own decisions. They starts to make decision from their past result and becomes more conscious about making the right choice. On this way sometimes they can be more self oriented. They can think only about themselves not for the society.

On the other side, when a child can't make their on choice they don't gain the real time experience of making any decision and it's good and bad side. They seem to depend on their parents for decisions. They tends to become less confident about the choices they make and it makes them less attractive. Also, some people don't know how to take the right step when no one is there for making one for them. In that time they become frustrated about themselve. So, it's very crucial for a person to make decisions on their own from the very beginning of their life.

From the above scenario, I can feel the great importance of childrens decision making idea. It may sometimes make a more individualistic society but it can make a citizen more confident and attractive from their own perspective.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You address both views and give a clear preference for children making decisions, especially in the conclusion: you acknowledge possible individualism but emphasise confidence and independence. The points about learning from the results of choices and relying on parents are relevant. However, the discussion is only partly developed: the concern that children may become self-oriented is asserted rather than explained, and the opposing view is framed mainly as the harm of not allowing choices. The task asks about decisions on everyday matters, so examples involving food, clothing or entertainment would make the response more specific. Explain how children can make choices while also learning to consider others, and support this with a relevant example.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two perspectives, and a concluding opinion. Transitions such as “On the other side” and “From the above scenario” help signal movement between points. However, progression within paragraphs is sometimes repetitive: the second body paragraph repeats that children become dependent and less confident without clearly distinguishing these consequences. Some links are also unclear, as in “On this way sometimes they can be more self oriented,” where the relationship between experience and selfishness needs explanation. Use clearer topic sentences and connect each claim to a reason or example. More precise referencing would also help the reader follow what “it” and “that time” refer to.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use a small range of relevant vocabulary, including “confidence,” “practical experience,” “self oriented,” and “individualistic society,” which allows you to communicate the main ideas. However, the range is limited and several choices or forms sound unnatural, sometimes making meaning less clear. For example, “real time experience” is not the natural phrase for learning through decisions, and “less attractive” does not clearly express the intended idea of being less capable or independent. There are also noticeable spelling and word-form errors, such as “childrens,” “themsselves” (written as “themselve”), and “decision making idea.” Aim for precise collocations and check spelling and plural forms; the suggestions below offer alternatives drawn from your response.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and longer sentences, including clauses with “when” and “because”-type reasoning, and the overall meaning is usually understandable. However, errors are frequent, and some complex sentences are not controlled accurately. Examples include “Some says” and “Both argument is right,” where subject–verb agreement and number are incorrect, and “They starts” and “They tends,” which also have agreement errors. Other problems include “make their on choice” and “a person to make decisions … from the very beginning,” where sentence construction and grammatical forms need attention. Practise plural subjects and verbs, possessives, and sentence patterns for cause and contrast. Proofreading each sentence for agreement and complete, clear clauses would improve accuracy.
