IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people believe that allowing children to make their own choices on everyday matters (such as food, clothes and entertainment) is likely to result in a society of individuals who only think about their own wishes. Other people believe that it is important for children to make decisions about matters that affect them.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 4.5)

Yes some people believe there children should take their own choices on everyday matters to let them do whatever they want which makes that society an individual society. means, the society that thinks about their own wishes and some people believe that the children should take the decision by thinking about the pros and cons of the choice. just like, if someone buy clothes then he will think that will this thing can affect my future personality in other people. In my opinion, every individual should teach their children about society and their everyday life things that they see to give them some knowledge for their future to take decisions very nicely. after that, give them freedom to make their own decision in life that make them happy. for example, if I want my child to be a doctor then I have to teach him/her the benifits that he will get in future like in futre if he becomes a doctor he will get best job with best salary package that will benifit him for his living then let them think about it if he is capable of studying hard and becoming a doctor then he will take that decision on his own. if he is very week in study then and he is good in sports then he will take a decision to become a sportsperson which makes him happy and he is keen interested in it.

In conclusion, every person has their own thinking based on their thinking some people make choices by thinking baout the society and some do this for thinking about thwir children

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You give a relevant opinion: children should first be taught about society and everyday matters, then be allowed to decide for themselves. The example about choosing between becoming a doctor and pursuing sport helps illustrate this view. However, the discussion of the opposing position is brief and not fully explained: the opening mentions that unrestricted choice could create self-centred individuals, but you do not develop why this might happen or give a supporting example. The prompt asks you to discuss both views, so this imbalance makes the response only partially developed. The conclusion is also unclear and does not restate your own position. Explain each view in a separate, developed point, then finish with a direct summary of your opinion.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0

There is a basic overall shape, with an opening, a main discussion and a concluding sentence, and the ideas generally relate to children’s choices. However, the response does not progress clearly between the two views and your own position. The long main paragraph moves from the general issue to clothes, then to your opinion and a detailed career example without clear stages. Linking expressions such as “just like,” “after that,” and “for example” do not always show the relationship between ideas accurately. The final sentence repeats the idea of people making choices but does not clearly conclude the argument. Use separate paragraphs for the two views and your opinion, and connect each example explicitly to the point it supports.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate the general subject, including “choices,” “pros and cons,” “freedom,” and “society.” The career example also gives you some useful language for discussing future outcomes. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate or unclear, such as “take their own choices,” “an individual society,” and “keen interested in it.” Spelling errors, including “benifits,” “futre,” and “thwir,” also reduce accuracy. These issues sometimes make the reader work to understand your meaning. Build a more precise set of phrases for discussing independence and responsibility, and check spelling and natural word combinations when revising.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

You attempt to express connected and conditional ideas, particularly in the example about what a child might choose if they are capable of studying or stronger in sport. However, sentence structures are limited, and attempts to combine several ideas often produce faulty sentences. For example, “if someone buy clothes then he will think that will this thing can affect my future personality” has problems with verb agreement, question structure and clause formation. There are also errors in articles, pronouns and sentence boundaries, as in “the children should take the decision” and the run-on sequence beginning “In my opinion.” These errors can make relationships between ideas difficult to follow. Practise accurate simple sentences first, then build longer sentences with controlled clauses and punctuation.
